Steinbeck shows the contrast between George and Lennie when he describes there physical features.'George being a short man with sharp features, whereas Lennie is portrayed as being 'shapeless of face' The contrast is also showed mentally as George is a smart, fast witted man whereas Lennies a retard

This also engages the reader by making them feel sorry for he girl and other children in that area because they wont get any education.
