The original Avant Garde didn't seem to enjoy the long lifespan of other YYF offerings, and was eventually "replaced" by the Avant Garde 2. Yet it's such a great yoyo... easily still not only hangs with but surpasses many of the premium yoyos out there. What made YYF "replace" it to begin with?
It was a design direction we were running with and felt the need to keep going before someone else did. We would love to make more but we still have AG1 in stock!

not unless you are really unlucky. Dings are obviously not great for yoyos but more damage can be done by sitting on a yoyo in your pocket or falling on it.

What does the contest team get as part of their sponsorship? yoyos, hotel, tickets, cash??
It varies player by player. Some get a cash advance at the start of the year so they can plan out their travels. There are incentives for contest results and also for videos. Players also eran money from signature editions and yo-yos. Some players not getting the cash will get help with travel to contests and accommodations. Some players also travel with yoyofactory to other events and earn money as paid professional demonstrators. Where possible we usually ask Contest Team players first.
I don't quite understand the 5A patent question from an hour ago. I know of at least two big YYF team members who specialize in 5A. I know at least one continues to compete in that division. How does the patent-holder's... patent... block YYF from competing in that division?
We, as a company, do not support or endorse anyone performing that said style. We do not pay for the right to use that patented style for our promotions.

Generally speaking, the mechanism for generating the human voice can be subdivided into three parts; the lungs, the vocal folds within the larynx, and the articulators. The lung (the pump) must produce adequate airflow and air pressure to vibrate vocal folds (this air pressure is the fuel of the voice). The vocal folds (vocal cords) are a vibrating valve that chops up the airflow from the lungs into audible pulses that form the laryngeal sound source. The muscles of the larynx adjust the length and tension of the vocal folds to ‘fine tune’ pitch and tone. The articulators (the parts of the vocal tract above the larynx consisting of tongue, palate, cheek, lips, etc.) articulate and filter the sound emanating from the larynx and to some degree can interact with the laryngeal airflow to strengthen it or weaken it as a sound source.
