In my opinion, you should be clear to the person that you dont wanna be close to him/her first. And i think its ok to reject the gift, nicely.

Its not mean to reject someone because you don't want the person to feel hurt one day when you get into relationship with someone. It hurts too. But what hurts the most is when you say those words like an example " don't wait for me etc". Those words are the killer. But if it doesn't mind if the person likes you, so just let them like you, or you can say you only can be friends with them. So you guys can still chit chat with each other.
