Did plastic memories make the cut or is it officially dropped?

I dropped it about a minute into this episode. I've had enough of its style of jokes to last me a lifetime, and I'm sure I'll see many more that I'm forced to watch for reviews or the preview guide.

I've been thinking, many people read your book but haven't given feedback. Why don't you offer one ask question for anyone who reads your book and gives feedback?

The ask questions actually do take some time to answer, and I don't really need more feedback at this point, a year out from publishing the book and multiple years out from writing it. I feel pretty conscious of what I consider the book's failings.

I honestly don't get it, how is Yui the furthest along honest engagement compared to the other two?

She's earnest. She says what she means (more or less), and is willing to be hurt. She's acting to preserve friendships she cherishes, and is willing to say exactly that. She cares about her friends for who they are, not for how they validate her own beliefs. She admits weakness without turning it into a kind of pride.
Yui is a very good person. Her friends are lucky to have her.

Did you feel as if OreGairu was directly addressing the "Hachiman's of the audience" this week?

Frankly, I feel like the show's always been doing that, but it's certainly gotten more direct and unavoidable in its message this season. Which will hopefully be a good thing for the audience, who maybe need a little more Haruno and a little less Sensei.

Hey, Bob. I just read your Shirobako piece and realized as far as inspiring younger generations goes, you're easily the main reason I had the inspiration to start up an anime reviewing blog of my own, so thanks for that. Long live the important lie and keep up the good work, man.

Thank you! I'm sure the essay itself implies how important that is to me.

How do you manage to stop writing about OreGairu? It's so damn hard without thinking I didn't do the episode justice.

I'm comforted by knowing there's always next episode! I got to really focus on Hayato this time, and could easily have written more about Yukino and Yui, but they'll definitely get their turns.

Hey, what's your favorite album of all time? Is it The Meadowlands?

The Meadowlands is probably the easiest choice. Other ones might be Reconstruction Site by the Weakerthans, and maybe All Hail West Texas by the Mountain Goats.

Just wanted to say thanks for all you do. I've followed your stuff since your reddit days and I've recently come back from almost a year off anime and coming back to your blog reminds me why I love the medium so much. Thanks and keep on being you. Oops, this wasn't a question haha.

You're very welcome! Glad to hear you're still enjoying my work!

Is the "bioshock Tim Rogers thing" worth reading?

Very much so. It's long, but there's a lot of good stuff in there.

Why are panty shots an inevitability in anime? I'm a couple of episodes into Yozakura Quartet, and the show keeps reminding me that some people enjoy wearing underwear

I feel like the classic anime panty shot is kind of a retro cliche at this point, but Yozakura certainly has a whole bunch of them. And at the most random times, too.

What?? B-but... the Gainax memories... dude... :(

Nostalgia for a visual style can't singlehandedly make a show enjoyable, unfortunately.

Just wanted your opinion on what shows are worth checking out this season.

Oregairu S2, Blood Blockade Battlefront, Sound! Euphonium, and Ore Monogatari!! A very easy top tier.

What did you think of Punch Line?

I think the time-manipulating and puzzle-establishing stuff it's doing is pretty interesting, but that stuff like that requires a strong central core of emotional investment to make me actually care about the mysteries being developed. And in this case, that emotional core is being sidelined by the silly premise stuff and dumb gags.

That isn't quite what I asked, I meant, "if someone were to watch Billiards, when should they do it in Parade, given that it came before and there are references to it?" But maybe you don't think Billiards is meant to be watched at all any more?

Watching it the way it was originally watched honestly seems best - separately, some time before the rest of the show. I think the show proper is paced well across its episodes, and that Billiards would be disruptive if it were directly fitted in.
But who knows, maybe the director actually has a preferred spot for it. He seemed to plan everything about this show out to an absurdly detailed degree way in advance.
