I read Hard Boiled Wonderland a few years ago and didn't enjoy it at all, but right now I'm reading Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and really liking it. It is /extremely/ reminiscent of Monogatari, actually.
Kurt Vonnegut, William Faulkner, Ursula K. LeGuin, Kazuo Ishiguro.
Cool, can you name one Favorite book for each author? I need new books..
Hocus Pocus, The Sound and the Fury, The Left Hand of Darkness, The Remains of the Day.
Ignoring the stigma around the word and its overuse, would you say Log Horizon is a deconstruction of the "Trapped in an MMO" scenario?
Why would it be a deconstruction? It just /is/ a "trapped in an MMO" show.
Hi bobduh! Have you read the manga for Parasyte? If so, I would love to hear your thoughts on the thematic significance of the parasites in general?
I read it a few years ago, so I don't really remember the whole story. But so far in the /show/ we've already got "adolescence" and "the awkward intersection of empathy and biology" as big themes.
Who are your favorite books writers ?
Kurt Vonnegut, William Faulkner, Ursula K. LeGuin, Kazuo Ishiguro.
Where were you when Akame ga Kill became the new HxH? Ep 15, catch up bucko.
hahahaha
Do you play an instrument? Which?
Drums, guitar, and singing. I am mediocre at drums, pretty bad at guitar, and fairly good at singing.
Do people like Makishima Shōgo exist in real life?
Yes.
Someone said this about Bakemonogatari: "When I was a kid I grew up with Violence Jack, Akira, Wrath of the Ninja, Ninja Scroll, Bio Booster Armor: Guyver, and Genocyber. What we have here is some girly weeaboo shit"
Sounds like a pretty tough dude.
You know if you thought Saber's ideals were just a strawman for the narrative to tear apart, I can't wait for you to see Shirou and muh justice. Unlike F/Z the whole story is about his ideals
Ho boy.
If you could watch/write about anime for a living, would you do it?
ANN pays me. It's just freelance work that supplements my main job, but I'm already about as "writing about anime for a living" as you can realistically get.So, yeah.
Were you transitioning away from individual episode write-ups before because you knew you would be writing them for ANN , or do you prefer doing essays and week in review style posts?
Personally, I'd probably prefer to just do essays, and maybe write up specific individual episodes if I felt they warranted it. But I like to create things and show them to people, so I'd probably end up writing more reliable stuff either way.
"but Evangelion's such a wild creation that the "because these things..." portions of that equation are almost always different, and reflective of all sorts of audience desires." What kinds of desires are they?
Sometimes they want it to be a different genre. Sometimes they want it to be less ambiguously optimistic. Sometimes they want its protagonists to be more overtly inspiring figures. There's a pretty broad mix.
Why is FLCL's soundtrack so good?
Because The Pillows are amazing. But I think way more shows should lean into their soundtracks as heavily as FLCL does - some scenes in FLCL are completely made by the perfect musical accompaniment. That scene where Mami smokes on the bridge in the first episode is iconic for many reasons, but "Bran-new Lovesong" is a big part of it.
"You are entitled to how you feel about the show!" Actually that's not how I feel about the show, I just restated what I've heard other people say. In reality I find that argument stupid, but I'm filled with too much self-doubt to simply say "let's agree to disagree". I want to crush those people!
Haha, I'm glad you're able to articulate what bothers you in this way. But yeah, trying to crush opinions you disagree with will only make you more and more unhappy and abrasive over time. Art shouldn't be like that!
"What if a bunny put a waffle on its head" It would look weird I guess, but how does that answer the question?
It doesn't. The question was "but what if my opinion," which is silly. You are entitled to how you feel about the show!
A lot of people have said that they hated the original Eva series but loved Eva 2.22, you've "blamed" that on escapism but doesn't it run deeper than that? What if the original was unable to draw us into the drama, and that the Rebuild improves the drama both visually and narratively?
Is fag ok? Like when a friend acts like a douche or has a bad attitude not in the girly sense.
I wouldn't. It's still a slur with a ton of baggage, using it still normalizes it (which both makes other people like yourself use it and encourages people who are actually homophobic), and it still makes many people feel uncomfortable or excluded, even if they don't say anything.
