Don't you think that often the groudwork in judo is broken of by the referee to soon?

Yes and no. It is, but it makes it more compelling to watch submissions being executed as efficiently and quickly as possible. I also enjoy the focus on tachiwaza better.

What is the difference in groundwork between judo and bjj? Find the rules in bjj difficult.

Not much; it's all derived from the same thing. Heel hooks, ankle locks, and body triangles aren't allowed in judo, and if you're not showing active progress with a submission, you'll get stood up by the ref. I've never competed in BJJ so I don't know how their points system works, but I'd ask @pattheflip.

If you have a time traveller husband, what time in your life would you want him to visit you?

If Audrey Niffenegger's book taught me anything, I'd tell him to go back & convince a younger me not to marry a time traveler. (And that if he ever calls me his "companion," just shoot him on the spot.)

Are you more of a ballerina or into hip-hop?

I deeply appreciate both styles of dance, and can definitely do neither

Do you feel like its important to take into consideration body types when you're going into competitve fights? In terms of what you exploit or go for and whatnot?

Yeah, to a degree. There are certain throws that are better for & against tall people (uchimata is really hard for a shorty like me to pull off; if you're tall, lots of top and belt grips), but I think in the end, you can pull off the throw you want no matter the body type. You just have to adjust to the situation as always.

Is there any childhood crush you wish to meet today?

Nope! Reunited with my childhood crush years ago in Tokyo; we're buds now!

i asked about getting into Judo a while ago and you said to find a good club, could you elborate a bit on that please? like whats in a good judo club and how can i spot a bad one? and are there health prerequisites? im not particularly in shape but i do lots of chores around the house so im decent

You can get into shape. I meant a good club as in, a reputable one, with positive coaches and respectful members. You'll inevitably run into egos (there are a lot of inflated ones in martial arts), but find a club you feel comfortable in. Some clubs are geared more for competition (but still worth practicing at if you're just in it for the exercise), and some are more beginner friendly.

Is it not dangerous not to tap out,to pass out?Do you tap when you are in an armbar? I think you do,cause of the possible damage.

Of course it's dangerous. If it's practice, I'll tap. But for competition, I'm just stubborn. I fight as hard as I can to get out of the choke, or at least resist until the ref stands us up (ground game is extremely brief & difficult in judo). I tap very quickly on armbars. That's never worth the injury.

Is it embarrassing for them when they wake up?

Ish? Most serious competitors have been there once or twice, so it's just a quick chuckle and then you get them up and going. It's a little embarrassing when you wake up, but nothing mortifying. Just feel kinda dumb, like, ugh maybe I should've tapped after all.

Ever put someone to sleep, intentional or not?

Yes. And I've been put to sleep a couple times too. I'm stubborn and don't tap on chokes in competition...

I want to do comics, but I'm having a really hard time making stories turn out appealing on the page. Like I can tell them in person, but they don't seem as funny or cool when I draw them. Can you recommend any good storytelling resources or tips to a beginner? Thank you! Your art is very lovely :)

Scott McCloud's books (UNDERSTANDING COMICS and MAKING COMICS) are probably a good start!

Internet frieds (i can't talk to you, cause i living here in méxico :(, is a big problem D: )

I don't think becoming friends with someone is as simple as just asking & agreeing. Do you know what I mean?

Have you ever had issues with self-motivation? If so, how'd you work through that? ps you rad as hell

I'm really into planning my work schedules! There's something really fun and satisfying about knowing exactly what I'm doing work-wise on any given day. If I don't, I procrastinate like a bitch. If ever the work feels uninspiring or whatnot, I remind myself that I'm doing what I love and how hard I worked to get here. Gets me right back on track.

Who's your favourite wrestler at the moment and of all time? You asked for good questions and I am producing gold!

RossZombie’s Profile PhotoRoss Zombie
You rule. I don't think I have an all-time favorite... I grew up around people who were SUPER into wrestling, but I didn't get into it until the last year or so. I think Dean Ambrose is fucking rad, Rollins is a fucking cutie, and Roman is so fucking hot holy fuck

Who would win in a fight, Brenden Fletcher or Cameron Stewart? I left out Babs Tarr because she would obvs win.

Dad and Mom would never fight!! You monster

Do you buy a lot of art merchandises?

Sorry, will need you to specify. Like, prints? models? that kind of thing? Or like, art supplies?

Hello Irene, where are you moving next and why is it the Bay Area? Sincerely, Best Roommate Never

I wanna live in a bunch of different places, but Oakland is the end goal, yo. See ya then, cutie pie!

What is the most difficult thing to learn how to draw?

I think the obvious answer is that it's different for everyone, but I have a particularly hard time with mechanical things, probably because I'm just not interested in their shape language.

I often just cannot translate what I see in my head onto paper. How do you get over such a block? Does the block even exist? Is the struggle real?

RossZombie’s Profile PhotoRoss Zombie
Yeah, I've definitely struggled with this a few times. I usually try to walk away from it for a while, experiment with different things, consume some media, practice whatever I'm trying to accomplish, consult the masters, and get back at it. Just sweat & tears.

I just wanted to tell you you are so cool and i love your art. You are really an inspiration. Good luck on everything you do!!!.

Whoa whoa! So kind! Thanks!!

Irene, I just wanted to say - I love your art. And I love the fact that you work as an artist! You are so so amazing and your art is so so pretty and I just wanted to let you know that. <3

Wow, thank you! :') So sweet!
