I don't pretend to be anything. Idk so I'm just gonna make something up. Here goes:
Who you are is just that. Who you pretend to be is a face and a mask you wear to function in the world without letting it get close to who you are so that way you can preserve your self identity and peace of mind. You could almost black out wearing a mask and have the time between them be a blue with only fragments of events that you can remember. You could also just make little changes to make yourself more palatable for the people around you, and in most cases you will need to.
