The reward you get from it is often proportional to the amount of effort you put into it. And even so, ads aren't the best way to earn from YouTube (over sponsorship/promoting stuff), but it's definitely a great start to fund your growth. So perhaps join a network like "Freedom!" to get started. It's easy and free.
