Hey whats the reasoning behind your recommendation to watch the Monogatari series in broadcast order? I have a friend who is hellbent, and insists that the chronological order is best. So that got me wondering.

I assume you mean the Haruhi series, and my answer in that case is "I dunno, it seems like it'd be more dramatically effective." I actually watched it in chronological order myself, but don't have a terribly strong opinion on it either way.

If you haven't answered a question, should I assume that you don't want to answer it? :(

Or that I just didn't have time to, or wasn't feeling like it at the moment, or something. I will never beat the question pile.

Hey, Bob. Let's say you meet new people, and they ask what your hobbies are. Do you tell them that you like anime? If so, what are their reactions (assuming they're not into it) ?

I think my first response to "what are your hobbies" is "writing," and then the "what kind of writing" answer is "at the moment, mostly criticism. I do critiques of anime - Japanese cartoons - and also just general stuff about art theory."
If they're not into it, I guess we're into the realm of theorizing why they wouldn't be? I'm not particularly worried about "justifying my hobby" - I get a lot out of what I do, and I'm happy to talk about it. Reasonable people will generally accept you being passionate about something, and I'm in the specific position where even unreasonable people tend to get stumped by the fact that I'm paid for this crap.

Bobduh senpai, you really need to play Analogue: A Hate Story!

I know! I actually own it, I just haven't gotten around to it.

Strangely the Hummingbird forums are still about 50% positive towards ThatAnimeSnob, and he has a fair few posts that people on there believe to be insightful even if they're total bullshit.

I mean, clearly that mindset has an audience. He gravitates to youtube for a reason - that community seems to trend younger and angrier than almost any other, which is also why gamergate has found such success there. The idea that you've discovered some secret of artistic taste that makes you better than other people has an understandable allure for the young and insecure.

What does it take to set up ads on a wordpress?

You can't do it on a Wordpress.com account; it has to be wordpress.org, where you pay for your hosting. Once you've done that, it's up to you what you do with your site - I'm currently experimenting with Project Wonderful ads. But you'll need a solid volume of traffic if you want to make any money out of it. The jury's still out on whether I'll actually be coming out ahead atm.
You /can/ set up an Amazon Affiliates program with any wordpress site, if you're linking people to products (like I do on my top 30 list). That won't pay your rent, but if you get high traffic it might pay for your lunch every now and then.

Just wanted to say thank you for your review of Flowers of Evil; it's a really powerful piece of art and I would never have watched it without your recommendation

You're very welcome! Glad to hear you enjoyed it.

I'm thinking of getting the Gatchaman crowds blu-ray (thanks to your list of favorite series). Having never watched the series I keep hearing the collection excludes the directors cut of the final episode. Do you think it's still worth the purchase?

It's a really unfortunate omission, but it wouldn't stop me personally from getting the collection if I wanted to. I didn't really have a problem with the series sans director's cut, and you can always seek out that particular episode in other ways.

I watched Maoyuu because I saw that you watched it/gave it a high rating and damn tears and chills at episode 9 and a really satisfied sigh at Maou's "I love humanity". Thanks for reviewing/writing up on it!

Glad you enjoyed it! That speech gets me every time.

Aren't you tired of Fate exposition episodes? I mean, 70% of the show are composed of boring expositions, i can't take this people eating while explain things anymore. Since Berserk fight there was what? 5 minutes of fight scenes? I thought SAO 2 had too much exposition but Fate is being 10x worse.

...really? There was the Shirou and Rin fight in the school, the exchange with Rider directly following that, the Caster-Archer fight at the temple, the Saber-Assassin fight going on at the same time as that, and recently the battle at the school. I can understand finding the exposition tedious, but there's definitely been plenty of fighting too.

Is Occult Academy worth watching? Is it meaningful in any way or just pure entertainment?

It's got a couple consistent thematic threads (parent-child relationships, the power of belief), but it's mostly notable for its silly faces and take-no-shit protagonist Maya. Mainly just entertainment.

Why is it taking so long for same-sex marriage to be legalized in some parts of the US?

Because fear makes people do awful things.
That answer's a few steps removed from same-sex marriage specifically (Americans are fearful for a variety of identity-based and economic reasons, that makes them either seek villains or cling to allegedly stable systems of righteousness, those actions tend to oppress the traditionally disenfranchised), but it's the base of it.

You sound very tired today Mr duh! Lots of work?

Yeah. I've been working a whole lot lately, and I'm kind of under the weather already, and the trains were all messed up today due to heavy rain so I had to spend an hour waiting on one end and walk two stops in the rain after service was discontinued on the other. I am very, very ready to have a few days off from work to just sleep or something.

Haha, that last question wasn't supposed to be a gotcha (thought I could see why you'd think so.) Rather, you had an essay on media choices somewhat reflecting personality, so I was curious if someone else's opinions on media affected your view of them.

I mean, it does in small ways, but I won't hold it against them? Like, I don't have a problem making certain assumptions about some of the people responding to that Flowers of Evil review - mainly that a lot of them are young and not particularly self-reflective, at least not yet. But that's not based in the simple fact that "they didn't like Flowers of Evil," it's based in the language and things they chose to focus on being very telling in specific other ways. We all like/dislike things for reasons that mean things, but you can't reduce that to "you like/dislike ____, thus you are good/bad".

you think Madoka would overtake Evangelion as your favorite without factoring in "End of Evangelion" (as in just the TV ending alone of course)?

Yes.

Since there seems to be a bit of a Madoka theme happening right now: TV, or Beginnings + Eternal?

TV. Definitely TV. It has better pacing, and the movies make some bizarre, damaging cuts.

How greatly would your opinion of someone change if they loved something you didn't like? Or if they didn't like something you loved?

Not at all. I mean, it might change in that I'd have a slightly better idea of what they respond to in media, but that's about it.
...and don't come back with WELL WHAT IF THEY LIKED GAMERGATE HUAGH GOTCHA NOW you know that's a very different thing.

Do you think there was any other immediately apparent way Madoka could've ended while being self-consistent? (not sure how else that could've been phrased, I hope you catch my waves)

No - it was perfectly designed to end the way it did. It's one of the most graceful endings I've seen.

Why are people so obsessed with trying to "gotcha" others with their own words?

Because there's nothing cooler than trying to look tough on the internet.
