Start building up some hard finger-tips by playing as often as you can, remember to keep stretching your fingers. Learn some chords, and then experiment - that's how I did!
Most importantly - trust your ears. Does it sound right? Do you like it? then it is right.
It will take time to get used playing, but it'll be worth it :)

The hand you will use to finger the fret board is your main objective, so focus on that firstly. But being strong in both hands is never bad, and it will create balance between your right and left hand, just like any other exercise requires and does.
Also, try to stretch your fingers daily. This will help you reach the notes more easy.
I found that this article is good at summing up these, and some more, exercises that you can do to get prepared :)
