IDK if you've been following it at all, but if you have, what's your take on the Vic Mignogna accusations? Also, to open this fruther, what's your stance on separating the artist from the art in re;ation to news like this? Should I never re-watch FMA or Rurouni Kenshin when this stuff is revealed?
I haven’t been following. But in general I’d say, we should believe women who come forward about sexual assault or harassment, especially in scenarios where it’s several women coming forward. They have nothing to gain. When that sort of thing does happen, the person should be looked in to and where possible be held to account.
As far as the larger question- what do we do with art we love when we find out the person who made it is a monster?
I think that’s different for each individual. But as a basic rule I think you should ask, “is my purchasing or sharing of this art likely to further this bad person’s abuse, or in some way hurt those they have abused?” If the answer is “probably yes,” you have to make a choice for yourself.
Sometimes the art that means to much to us- Miles Davis’ music, for me- is made by shitty people. Miles is dead, so I don’t feel I’m hurting anyone by listening to his music. R. Kelly? He’s alive and will use my support to keep hurting others. So I don’t listen to his music any more.
But like I said, each of us has our own limit and set of rules for this! There’s no easy answer.
