How did people survive in Europe by the way though back in the day in winter (with winter lasting so long) with so much snow? You know, like before the industrial revolution?

They built rudimentary shelters out if whatever materials they had. One type was a stone structure with a thatched roof. They would use fire to stave off the cold.
I think mud/clay was also used as construction material.

I had one 20+ yrs ago. About a 2 h drive. We used phone calls during the week and spent weekends together.
Now with new tech, people can use video calls. I think ultimately, for the relationship to continue (on a path to marriage), one of the parties will need to relocate.
