Do you feel that the next-gen consoles were unduly rushed to cash in on the Christmas market? Would you agree that basic things like headsets and remotes should be included in-box? (And maybe the inverse for the wretched Kinect?)

Yeah, I do agree there. If I remember correctly, a headset came with the Xbox 360. Did have to buy a remote separate though. I'm unsure about Kinect though, in a way it should be in because you don't have to use it but the option is there if it is included in price. There's no way the price of consoles would go down if they forewent Kinect or PS's equivalent so

What's your preference: sci-fi that's more "character-centri"c (ie, about how individuals react in a certain situation with a sci-fi twist) or more "conceptual" stuff that focuses more on the situation itself and it's wider affects, on maybe lots of people etc

A bit of both, for example: I love Mass Effect as it has that Grand Space Opera style whilst looking at wide, contemporary issues (such a race, sexuality, war etc.) however, the game itself is very character centric and for the best part of the series all choices you make effect everyone in some way.

What popular sci-fi franchises do you not really "get"?

Erm Battlestar Galactica is probably the one I've always been like "So what?" Although I'm willing to try and watch it. A more recent one is Defiance, just looks a bit naff

What about that game made you realise how awesome sci-fi is? How did the "bug" set in?

I don't know, just how well thought out it was and the idea of space as a place to go in a story- it was all new to me then.

Is there any show that you'd watch "traditional" TV for? :-D

I don't know tbh, I don't want TV so don't know what's on!

Games companies should focus on making great games that people enjoy. Do you feel ethically questionable tactics like rigging the app store ratings, relentless profiteering in the form of IAPs, oppressive DRM etc is justifiable simply because it keeps the lights on in the cubicle farms?

Yes. I admit they do need to please gamers but they need to make 1) money 2) a game that pleases the client. Surprisingly, you have a magical thing called Choice where you can CHOOSE not to buy into it and/or play

Isn't the Hollywood-ization of gaming (ie: expensive spectacle = better) leading to massive corporations freezing out indie developers? Surely the bar is being set unreasonably high that it's an uphill battle for indie devs to compete with this perceived "quality" of AAA games?

You might be right but indie devs are still thriving despite this. Flappy Bird for example, hugely popular, creator made tons of money and had limited graphic spectacle. Not a AAA title was it? There's many other examples, think of all the Greenlit games on Steam, indie devs are thriving despite these huge 'Hollywood' games

Why is mobile gaming such a complete trainwreck, in your opinion? And how would you fix it to make it, ya know, actually worth investing time in, as a gamer?

It isn't a complete train wreck, there's some bad some good. There's many ways I could rectify it to appeal to all gamers but that is unrealistic and some would be bad for business

What current trends in gaming do you think are harming the industry? Any common gameplay mechanics that, right now, you feel aren't aren't endearing to gamers? And how would you rectify them?

Mechanics never appeal to all gamers. There are tons of mechanics I'd say. Trend wise its gamers who won't see games as a business model and that the companies selling them are putting things in because they work and trying to stay running
