How often do you update your top list, on average? And has anything ever moved up or down on the basis of a rewatch rather than an addition to the list?

Maybe once every six months or so? And rewatches haven't changed anything, but I do shuffle shows around whenever I get around to adjusting it.

A lot has been said about Euphoniums use of Kumiko and Reina's relationship and how should the show proceed with that, putting all your professional ideas aside, a simple question remains. Do you ship them?

I mean, they are very cute together. There are plenty of scenes in Euphonium that contain more romantic tension than entire explicit romances/romcoms. Great direction, animation, and character writing goes a long way!

"You could frankly frame the entirety of [MM] around this one scene." Could you expand on this. You haven't mentioned anything feminist (real use) about the show until now. That scene being the ugliest part of humanity in itself says something about our/their world? What about Hitomi and Momdok?

I meant that if you were to do a full feminist interpretation of Madoka, which would be a pretty natural way to approach the series, that scene would likely be the taking-off point. That scene directly frames the mechanics of magical girls as metaphorically comparable to the antagonism all women face in modern society. Scenes don't get much more politically charged than that!

How do you even order your top list? I have atop 10 that I'm pretty sure about but beyond that there's 30-odd shows that I don't even know how to begin to put into order

I just go with my gut on what feels right. The numbering is honestly pretty meaningless after my top ten or so as well.

What do you think of the Bernie or bust movement? Is there any validity behind it beyond people just hating Hillary Clinton?

If Bernie's route to the nomination is closed, people do need to support Clinton. Clinton may be just the newest heir in our neoliberal corporate dynasty, but she's at least as progressive as Obama, and she's obviously not going to set up the racist police state the Republicans are gunning for. A Trump or Cruz presidency wouldn't just be disastrous, it would be legitimately life-threatening to millions of people.

Rewatched Madoka over the weekend to follow along with your write-ups, and they definitely improved my enjoyment! Looking forward to the rest of them. Is it odd that I have no real motivation to watch Rebellion? I know nothing about its story, but Madoka feels so whole that idk what it could add.

Glad to hear it! I feel like the best way to consider Rebellion is as if it's a gorgeous two hour Madoka AMV. It doesn't really add to Madoka's completed story, but it's definitely a very viscerally entertaining time.

Is it correct to assume that Community (its earlier seasons at least) are one of your favorites?

Yeah, Community's early seasons are great. The second season in particular is just a remarkably accomplished comedy.

Do you think Yamada should switch over fully to movie productions? Personally, I think she should as it gives more creative freedom and choice in projects, and would open her up to a wider audience. (what if next Miyazaki tho)

Yeah, I wouldn't mind it at all. Slanting anime towards the late-night crowd is a clear limitation that she could do without.
Pretty much any high-profile anime film director is going to get the Miyazaki comparisons, so I'm not particularly worried about that. Even Hosoda, who actually got kicked off a Ghibli project, gets those.

I think I understand what you mean. Having watched the anime [Cross Game], I did not feel the need to read the manga...can't really explain why though. Now I'm curious, what makes 'A Silent Voice' different from 'Cross Game' in terms of why you want to watch one adaptation and not the other?

Cross Game's adaptation is in my understanding a very straight, no-frills adaptation of an excellent manga - it's fine, but if you've read the manga, you're not going to get more out of the anime. A Silent Voice is a film adaptation of a manga being directed by possibly the best working director in anime. It seems quite likely Yamada will be able to elevate the original material, and at the very least will be offering a distinct interpretation of it.

Hey Bobduh! When are you going to watch Cross Game, the anime? I remember you said that you enjoyed the manga. :D

I don't really feel the need to watch it. The manga's great, I'm fine with that.

OPM only tried to say anything in one episode? I remember reviews talking about it shows the problems of meritocracy and corporate culture through analogue. What was that and what was that one episode trying to say?

I'd say OPM is about the problems of meritocracy and corporate culture in roughly the same way that Symphogear is about the dehumanizing perils of idol culture. The episode I was referring to was the Mumen Rider episode, which actually stabs very directly at the nature of heroism. The show also makes occasional gestures towards the ennui born of an unfair and unsatisfying adult life, but I'm not sure I'd call that a full "message."

I see a lot of people really liking the sort of heroic philosophy from characters in stuff like MHA and OPM. But a while back I saw a lot of people really hate it when it came from some character in F/SN Unlimited Blade Works. Why is that? How did that show handle it?

The writing of all three shows is pretty fundamentally different. In UBW's case, the show spent most of a season directly elaborating a philosophical position that was in the end pretty simple and kinda empty. In contrast, OPM only really spent one episode trying to say anything, and MHA illustrates its philosophy incidentally, through the active actions of its characters. So it comes down to both the fact that UBW was much worse structurally about integrating its ideas, and also that its ideas aren't very compelling.

Why didn't you just read A silent voice on crunchyroll? (or rather, how did you resist)

I really prefer actually holding manga in my hands, and since I've been reviewing it for ANN anyway, I mind waiting even less.

What do i do if i want to hear your full thoughts on each ConRevo ep, and the Week in Review section feels too small

If you'd like to fund airing writeups, I'd be happy to dedicate a weekly slot to it! It certainly offers plenty to talk about.

I'm new to Ursula K. Le Guin. Can you read Left Hand of Darkness without reading her other stuff?

Yep! Totally self-contained.

So how much do you actually hold your comments back when you walk in on your housemates watching lame anime?

I'll just say something like "eh, this isn't really my kind of show," which is true.

Did you get more backlash from your positive review of Fate than from your negative review?

By far. A lot of that came down to my positive review daring to suggest a watch order, but it seems like even a lot of the fans were kind of disappointed by the second half, and the general narrative switched to "the adaptation choices made this bad."
