why? because confucianism isn't just a philosophy, it's a way of life. i don't think there's another philosopher quite as influential, and with such a long, apparent influence on a whole community. it was the roots of china. community before self, the value of productivity, filial piety. all of what we call "asian values" stems from confucianism.
his philosophies were actually /relevant/ and wasn't just a theory. debates about ethics are great and all but in the end, what does the trolley problem do but cause a minor headache and a sense of despair that no matter what you do, you're fucked?
nowadays, confucianism is only brought up to, oh, i don't know, justify a whole country's neoliberalist ways (hello, singapore!), but we can't deny the reach of confucianism. and while we can't say whether confucianism actually helped our society, i would argue that the state of china now -the startling materialism, the greed without conscience- are all byproducts of commercialism.

it's not a personality trait exactly, but i HATE people who are always late.

it's possible but tbh it's hard. mandarin is terribly, beautifully complex. there is no grammar for one to slowly work through, there is no set alphabet, no set pronunciation.
i think of all languages, immersion and exposure matters the most to mandarin speakers. (oh yeah to add on to my previous ask- the impact of reading is obvious here, because mandarin was the only language i spoke, and yet i'm terrible at it, while english was my strongest subject.)

no, god, no. reading was -is- such a big part of my life. it shaped my thinking, shaped my habits and my language. knowledge and imagination are the two most wonderful gifts anyone can have.
it's the only reason i can even speak english now. i grew up in such a chinese saturated world that i listened to cantonese more than i did english. so while i think my writing is fine, it's obvious when i speak that i'm someone who isn't used to english.
