jongin recognizes bits of his old self in jungkook- how the younger boy genuinely believes that all he needs to do is dance, the extra hours he puts in at the studio, the way jungkook smiles, confident and proud in the way only the young and innocent can. (it's the way jongin used to smile; he doesn't do that much anymore)

"you're an idol," jongin turns off the music and says coldly, wanting to see, for some reason, jungkook break down. he wants to spare the boy the long months of hurt and pain and just cut straight to the core. a favour, he tells himself.

predictably, jungkook whips around furiously, arms falling to his side in one furious motion. "we're different." the distaste in his voice is obvious, that impudent brat. "you're from sm."

so naive, so trusting. jongin wants to strip that away. he takes a step closer to jungkook, noting in satisfication how jungkook takes a nervous step back. "oh, maknae. you have so much to learn. you're lucky i'm here."

jungkook doesn't know how to interpret the glint in jongin's eyes, but he raises his head and smirks. "well then, sunbaenim, please take care of me."

jongin tugs at the yellow ears on his head and grimaces. "luhan, i look stupid."

"you look adorable," luhan pats his cheek and beams. "oops, messed up your blush!" before jongin can bat him away, luhan has pulled out the blusher and attacked jongin's cheeks until they are as red as chanyeol after he gets drunk. he adjusts his own red cap and grins at their reflections.

"why do you get to be ash," jongin complains. they're maybe 10 years too old for a pokemon costume, but secretly he's excited because no matter what anyone says, pokemon NEVER gets old.

luhan ignores jongin, as usual. "so cute. now let's get to the party!"

"i dressed you like this for a reason," luhan whispers as soon as they get to the party, thumping music and crazy crowds. luhan grabs a beer from someone who looks like a stripper cop and takes a quick chug. "oh, there she is. say hi to pika!"

"pika?" jongin echoes, but he's already being pushed right into a girl.

the girl spins around, the tiny ears attached to a band on her head vibrating in place. "you called- oh?"

oh, indeed. jongin can only stare slackjawed as the pretty girl, dressed in a tiny babydoll dress, focuses her attention on him.

"pikachu, eh?" she asks, flipping her shocking pink hair behind her. jongin wonders if it's a wig, if he can maybe run his fingers through them and tug her closer until her pink tinted lips are flush against his own- "i'm jigglypuff tonight."

"JIGGLYPUFF, USE ATTRACT," luhan warbles as he tumbles past shakily with a beer in his hand.

pika brings her hand up to cover her mouth and lets out an embarrassed giggle that goes straight to jongin's crotch. suddenly he's glad the outfit is loose and airy.

"it's super effective," jongin whispers, bringing a coy smile to pika's face.

---

"is it?" she takes a step closer to jongin until they're only a few inches apart, and jongin gulps visibly. "well then, pikachu, are you interested in some crossbreeding?"

GOOD THINGS
- classes are FUN. no, really. i enjoy tutorials so much i've never skipped them. (lectures tho....)
- the lecturers/tutors are the most helpful i've ever seen
- i barely have classes lol. i have 12 hours of class a week.
- i only have 3 assignments per subject (which is also a bad thing because each assignment is then 3-40%)

BAD THINGS
- it's purely academic, which means i have no hands on experience. of course, i am merely in my first/second year (it's complicated) but everything has been essays presentations videos essays more essays.
- um, this isn't a bad thing but.... i am the only asian in most of my classes, and while no one is explicitly rejecting me, it is pretty obvious that i'm the Different One. especially when we're analyzing cases based in asia, and ooo! look! there's an international student right here. how handy. every lecturer knows my name. i stand out quite a bit.

i love it here. i didn't want to come but i hated my old uni so much i had to come. i don't regret it. i love the environment of my university. it's so artsy~ there are no romances on the sprawling uni fields, but close enough.

that is a weird pairing but ok.

it's low season at the island. tao spends four consecutive days blissfully lost in the warmth of the ocean, diving and surfing, before he's directed to a student.

now, as he stands in the private beach of the resort he works at, he sort of wishes that he was back in those four days, just lazing around on the sand and sipping martinis. but no, tao is actually paid to work.

"um, sir, if you want to learn how to dive, you need to actually learn how to swim."

"yes, what do you think i'm doing," luhan snaps, legs flailing around in the water. he's looking a bit like a drowned puppy right now. a cute puppy, but nonetheless, not human.

"you might want to remove the flotation devices. and uh, stand up." tao looks down at the water, which barely reaches his belly button.

"DROWNING," luhan shrieks and there he goes again, clambering for anything to hold on to, which, as they are in the ocean surrounded by nothing but salty water, more often than not is tao. perhaps tao shouldn't have asked him to abandon his floats.

luhan is very touchy. luhan is very feely. luhan is terrified of drowning, and hence clings to tao whenever he thinks he is in danger of going under. which is always. tao is starting to think that it would be better to rent himself out as some sort of human flotation device and show luhan the wonders of the sea with the older boy clinging to him like a barnacle.

his thought process is broken when luhan loops his arm around tao's waist. tao is so surprised that he almost forgets to kick his feet to stay afloat. luhan's yelp brings him to earth and he manages to recover fast enough that his hair doesn't even get wet.

---

swimming has been ingrained in tao since he was a wee toddler, brought to the beach by his sun loving parents who owned a summer beach house on one of the islands dotting the philippines. his mother used to joke that tao is a sea monkey, the way he lives for sand castles and flops happily in the shallow waves.

but luhan. luhan.

---

"luhan, kick your feet." luhan kicks his feet. once. and proceeds to sink into the water. he yelps and his fingers are digging into tao's waist again.

it disturbs tao so much that he wears a wetsuit the next day. the heat from luhan still transfers onto his skin just the same. tao actually forgets how to swim this time.

lol i actually took classes for two years when i was 13 (2006~8). but yeah here's what i did to get better.

---

a) in the beginning stages, i printed out song lyrics (i have a stack of folders with 2-300 songs :|) and practiced singing along until i could read hangul fast.
b) i fell into (then) obscure fandoms like bigbang (try mentioning bb in 2006 haha) and epik high, and NO ONE TRANSLATED SHIT so i had to do it myself.
c) when tablo hosted dreaming radio, i listened to it every day, subbed some stuff, translated his cyworld entries, translated his blonotes.
d) i made a me2day, forced myself to update it at least twice a day.
e) remember when youtube didn't exist. remember the struggles of clubbox. hardsubs? softsubs? jfc who has time for that let me just watch things unsubbed.
f) i'm terrible at watching dramas, so even if i watch it subbed, i'll usually be multitasking. eventually i just listened to dramas instead of watching it.
