If you had to hire a journalist and you have a choice between an unqualified journo who was a "progressive" or a conservative who was highly qualified. Who would you choose to employ at Polygon?

Why do I feel like you've never applied for a job before.

What's your biggest "Oh, crap!" moment from gaming? Is it the Flood appearance in Halo? (Because that seems to be most said one.)

The ending of Fatal Frame 2.

There's a tortoise laying on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, and it's beating its legs trying to turn itself over, but it can’t, not without your help. But you’re not helping. Why is that?

The thing that strikes me the most about Blade Runner after all this time is how many people are SMOKING. It's the #1 thing that dates movies these days.

Just played through Wind Waker again, and reminded how I felt bad for Ganon and totally understood his reasons for his evil doings. Ever play a game where you felt bad for the antagonist?

I think that should be the case in most games. Two dimensional villains get old quick, the best antagonists believe that they're doing the right thing. Magneto is the gold standard example in this case. A good villain is often trying to do something you agree with in a way that you don't, or you can at least see how their actions are understand through the lenses of their own experiences.

I imagine you have very, very little free time, what with the five kids, being married, having a job and all that. Doesn't the lack of free time get you depressed? How do you deal with being so busy all the time?

You learn to value the little free time you have, and it's almost worth it. A lot of people waste a whole lot of time on stupid shit, and I don't really have that luxury. I try to make sure I get the most out if the time I have, and it makes me feel really thankful for those hours when they come in.

Did you ever play Thirty Flights of Loving? If so, how do you feel about the game?

I have not, but I've heard amazing things. It's very hard for me to go back and hit games I missed the first time around these days.

How do you manage all those kids?! My wife and I found out she's having twins, and I'm scared half to death with the thought of managing two little people!

You should be. Being scared and nervous is absolutely the healthy response, because it shows you're taking it seriously. It's a huge change in your life, and it's incredibly challenging, but being a parent is also very, very rewarding. Twins though, man. Buckle up. :-)

Do you think there will be a new Nintendo portable after the 3DS?

I don't know what Nintendo's longterm plans may be. That company is in flux right now, and I'm really hoping they come up with a winning strategy.

Hey what are your favorite films?

The Rocketeer is a big one, I really enjoyed Gravity. Goodfellas is an all-time favorite. Casino is another one.

Are you or were you ever a jealous person?

EVERY WRITER IS. You can tell a story is really good when your first thought is "I wish I had written this!" I don't really get jealous of people, I get jealous at how they express themselves. When someone does better than I do at a story you get a little stab of it as well. It's a healthy thing as long as you understand where it's coming from, use it as inspiration to get better, and don't get consumed by it.

How old were you when you had your first kid?

You know, recently events have made me kind of skittish when it comes to talking about my family online.

Are you looking forward to Binding of Isaac: Rebirth?

I honestly don't know that much about it, although I really enjoyed the original game. There are too many things to keep track of these days.

How do you think Kickstarter dying, Greenlight being busted, and early access cynicism will change the indie scene?

I think I just answered this one?

You know that feeling you get when you know you wanna play a game but you don't know which one exactly, so you browse your Steam library ten times searching for something but you don't feel like playing anything?

It happens nearly every night. We'd be a lot happier if we just decided to play one thing, stick with it until finishing, and then move on. Indecision is a killer.

What are your favorite comics?

You know, I'm big a fan of Robert Kirkman. I think Invincible is a ton of fun, and I need to catch up with Walking Dead. I think Hawkeye is great. Starting to get back into the Marvel superhero stories. Locke and Key is another amazing one.

How do you think Kickstarter fatigue, Steam Greenlight being rampled down, and early access problems will change the landscape for Indie Devs on PC?

I'm honestly not sure. It's never been easy to make money in indie games, and that trend certainly won't change any time soon. Marketing has always been nearly as important, if not more so, than having a great game.

I saw Fury last night and it affected me deeply. Pretty brutal. Did you see it yet? Have any thoughts?

I haven't seen it! I'll add it to the to-do list, I've heard a lot of really varied things.

Have you played Destiny for any amount of time? what do you think of it in the long run? will it be able to maintain a considerable player base or it will fade sooner rather than later?

I'm not playing right now, but there's a ton about it I love. I think the world and the play itself are pretty cool, and I really hope Bungie can figure out how to tell a better story and get the organization of the game a bit cleaner. It's hard to explain the problems I have with it, but it's a weird combination of super-slick presentation, visuals and action combined with a structure that feels rushed. I honestly believe the game had some major problems during development.
But, here's the important thing, there is nothing about it that can't be fixed. I can't wait to see what's coming down the line for Destiny, and I'll be the first in line for new content and sequels.

I'm curious on what you think the future of gaming looks like. Do you think there is any "victory" to be had? Is it more a case of seeing what can be salvaged? Or are we actually fighting for our survival? I feel the third option more often than not :( Kinda hoping you disagree.

Victory to be had in what way? Right now I don't know what game to play in the few hours before I go to bed because my backlog is literally filled with amazing games. It's easier than ever to make a game and sell it. More voices are being heard. The conversations have gotten better. I'm pretty hopeful!

You keep saying on Twitter that you've been reading comics. What have you been reading? Have you been liking it?

I like comics a ton, and when they really nail a story they do it better than nearly any other medium. The problem is that it can be REALLY hard to keep up, and I despise having to keep track of five different lines and characters and arcs just to get a full story. Comic fandom can be exhausting.
I just got done with Whedon's run on Astonishing X-Men, and now I'm onto Fraction's Invincible Iron Man. I'm trying to pick the best arcs and runs and jumping from character to character to just get some good stories. I've gotten a ton of great recommendations, and I think I'm going to catch up on Daredevil next.
Also, Hawkeye is brilliant.

don't dream it; be it

I don't know who you are, but I was listening to this soundtrack just yesterday. It was a big part of my youth, and changed how I looked at my own life. It's a big part of what made me decide to really try for this whole "writer" thing.

I believe I remember you picked up a new TV about this time last year for the new consoles. I'm looking to upgrade and am curious what you got and how it's treating you.

It was a 72 inch Samsung, but I can't remember the model number. For my living room I like to go big, but be sure you're buying something with minimal input lag if you're first thought is gaming.
