Who in the Gaming Industry would you like to draw special attention to for representing diversity in an exceptional manner?

I think I'm probably the wrong person to ask.

What do you think the best way to portray homosexuality in games is? Dragon Age style in which their sexuality is advertised as being a strong part of their character? Or possibly New Vegas style where it's more "matter-of-fact" stated? Or something else entirely?

I think I'm probably the wrong person to ask.

Hey Ben, you seem to enjoy your root beer. What's your favorite? Sorry to bring the controversy to you feed but people want to know where you stand!

IBC or Virgil's are my two go-tos. I don't get fancy.

How much influence did you have over the shift at Polygon to cover the wider culture (i.e. non-gaming related articles)? I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, just curious since I remember the PA Report following a similar trajectory.

I'm not sure how much influence I had in it happening, it's a site with a lot of people and a lot of strong personalities, but I love writing that content so I'm not shocked I do a lot of it. :-)

What game, over the next 3 months or so, are you most looking forward to playing. Only one! No cheating!

Master Chief Collection! I'm going to play it co-op with my son.

What questions should I ask about diversity in gaming that will help me flesh out a 7 page paper on the subject?

Tybbie
Do your own homework! :-)

Why don't you just apologise? Just take some responsibility, say sorry for everything you've done and throw yourself on the mercy of the gamergate crowd. We may not forgive you right away but it would be a meaningful first step.

You're adorable.

What's your opinion on Gawker media? They seems to be getting way to much support from media in my opinion considering the incredibly awful things they done in the past.

I don't have much of an opinion of Gawker as a company, I like some of their sites better than others. I think Kotaku does some great work, but they also run a ton of stories I don't agree with. But such is life.
I think the idea of trying to use advertisers as leverage to control coverage is deeply stupid, especially when people pretend to care about "corruption." Having advertisers control content is kind of the definition of corruption, and for some reason gamergate thinks that's preferable to reporters thinking for themselves.

and to compound that previous question, why is Gamergate, an anonymous movement with no entry barrier, responsible for the actions of everyone but every time someone in the games press/gawker says something offensive (like Gawker's bullying tweets, Leigh Alexander's racism), it's always just a joke?

I honestly can't tell these questions from satire.

Why is it that the (awful and rightfully condemned) harassment of Anita, Zoe, Brianna, etc gets so much coverage, while the media seems to brush aside any harassment of those on the pro-gg side, such as Milo Y. receiving a syringe, Liana K's allegations of blacklisting amongst peers, etc?

You'd have to ask the media I guess, I don't even handle news for Polygon.

Were there any keywords that made you think "yep, this is nuts" with respect to gamergate? (such as shill for example )

I think the hashtag is enough.

How do you go about editing other writer's stories? Is there a specific app you use? I'm an editor myself, and would love for my writers to see the mistakes and fix their own mistakes, as opposed to making corrections myself. I feel like that would help them grow more quickly. What do you think?

Google docs! I like to make comments, you can see the versions, it's very helpful.

Hello Ben, Why do you torture yourself answering these GG questions? Seems like nothing but trouble and headaches.

I don't mind talking about this stuff, and it helps me organize my thoughts.

Do you think Gamergate could have been handled better? Events like Gamers are Dead and stopgamergate2014 have led to the biggest increases not decreases. Was opposition too antagonistic? http://topsy.com/analytics?q1=%23gamergate&q2=%23stopgamergate2014

These people were harassing women long before anyone wrote any of these articles. The only difference is now they fly under a single hashtag.
I don't understand why their reaction in trying to preserve a stereotype was to show the world the worst parts of it, but at least the mainstream media is now talking about the harassment in the industry.

You tweeted this: @BenKuchera: I've talked to some level-headed #gamergate folks today, but you can't join a movement with that baggage and claim you're a moderate. You could basically use Muslims and Islam in that tweet, you do know that right? Would you agree with that tweet as well?

I wish people would realize how terrible offensive that argument is.

What's your experience with religion? I gather that you live in a relatively conservative Christian environment (Ohio-I'm generalizing a bit, of course). Has that had any positive or negative impact on your or your family?

I think I'm going to keep this topic private. It's not that I don't want to talk about it, it's more that I discuss so many things about my life there are a few I like to keep for myself, and spirituality is one of them.

Why do you think there has been such a hesitance by medium to very large dev studios to talk about the situation? Is it simply PR or not wanting to give a platform for calls of affirmative action hiring or something else?

Why would they? There's nothing to gain and a lot to lose. I don't agree with it, but it is what it is.

Do you know of blogs that focus primarily on games-as-story? I write fiction & game in my downtime. If I blogged about in-depth story dissection in games, d'you think readers could be into that? I worry if it's too niche, but am curious if you know of anyone that does that now that I could emulate.

None that I know of, sadly.

How do you juggle 5 kids and 2 careers? My wife and I both work and have a 2.5 year old and we're worn out at the end of the day. It's taken us almost a week to cut and paint a box for her Wall-E costume, and that's a pretty unambitious project.

It's very stressful and I rarely sleep. But I love my life and the kids have given me a great grounding that I wouldn't have had normally. It's made me grow up.

Just to be clear, the only reason that you wouldn't like to enact a clear system where conflicts of interest are spelled out, it because that ideal is associated with some level of harassment?

LOL WHUT

Did you see the "rifts in time" trailer for AC:unity today? Um.....huh? Dr. Assassin Who? What did you think?

I'm avoiding trailers for the game to not be spoiled, but what you just said made me feel funny in all the right places.

When it comes to critical examination of media, how much weight do you personally attach to the authorial intent?

I like knowing about intent, but I also like finding it out AFTER I've consumed the media. Making up my own mind is more fun.

I do understand that a lot of this gamergate stuff is negative and needs to be called out... But I must admit it's getting a little tiring seeing stuff about it on your Twitter so often. I know that the bad stuff is bad. I'm just bored of hearing the same stuff over and over from people I like :(

Yeah, I hear you. But I feel like a lot of it needs to be said. I'll be addressing it less in the future.
