I'm an aspiring games journalist also living in Ohio. I just graduated college in December. Would you say working remotely has helped or inhibited your career? Would I have more luck relocating to the Bay Area?

I got lucky in my job, but part of that luck was that I stayed out of debt, partly by staying in Ohio, and working my butt off. Moving may help in some ways, but it can be much harder in others, and I've found that the cheaper you can live someplace the better off you'll be in the early years of your career. Good luck!

I had a look, but all of the google results including the word popped up because your name was in a top story in the sidebar. got a lot of this: bit.ly/1GqUZ7B

Knowing that Bethesda will have a E3 showcase this year, what are you expecting from it and what are the odds of finally getting a FO4?

They're just going to show an Elder Scrolls Online expansion and then shut it down. Maximum troll.

I remember being ridiculed by gamer friends in high school back in the day for having a Mac. My latest macbook seems to play many recent games with ease now. Has there been a noticeable growth in gamers using a Mac for games or is it a small percentage?

I'd have to say a small percentage, but I really don't know. They're certainly not the best things for gaming, although I wouldn't trade my Air for anything when it comes to traveling for work.

Is there a hack to get Tie Fighter working in VR yet? :P

I don't think they rendered whatever would be behind you in the cockpit. :-)

You. Desert Island. One year. You have an internet connection, but you can't download any new software over it. No Netflix, no Pandora. You get one system (PC counts as a system) and one game. What do you pick, and why?

Dota 2, probably. I always wanted to learn it, and it seems like that would take a few years.

Why is there such a backlash against things like a woman Thor or black Human Torch or gay Colossus, when there are literally thousands of white comic book characters that fit those molds already? Why do some people push back so hard against the marginalized having a turn in the front seat?

They see it as an attack on themselves. They're so used to having everything in pop culture pander to them that having someone else get a turn is confusing, it feels wrong to them. They'll get used to it.

The Escapist's recent hires: WHY WOULD THEY *DO* THAT?

Because they think it's a good way to grow the site? I'm not sure I want to speculate on someone else's hires.

What are you excited to see at GDC?

My GDC is literally all VR, and I'm looking forward to seeing Valve's hardware and checking out Sony's latest version of Project Morpheus. I want someone to release a good, inexpensive headset that anyone can buy and enjoy.

I notice that you polygon didn't mention RPS's in/famous interview with Molyneux in any of its recent articles on him. Any reason for this?

You'd have to ask the people who wrote those articles!

Do you think there are any MMOs - either current or in production - that would benefit from VR? (aside from the obvious persistent universe space simulators)

VR is tricky, you really have to design for it from the ground up. It's rare that a game works well on a screen and in VR, and there's a significant amount of power you need to run games in VR well. So I don't know if any MMOs out there would want to put that much thought and money into something that most people can't access yet.

This whole Gamergate thing is blowing up in our faces. Law and Order basically just called all gamers terrorists. ALL of us. I want the 90's to just fucking END already.

If you felt attacked by that episode I'd take a good hard think about where that feeling came from.

With the impending death of app stores, what do you think is the next answer for marketing and exposure for mobile games?

Do you really think app store are going to die? It's not like people are going to stop buying apps. Getting get 'em somewhere.

The whole process of upgrading to the new 3DS XL and transferring game data made me think: is Nintendo going to ever reach a place of commen sense business / user experience before it's too late?

Gosh, I hope so. They're so far behind the curve on the stupid shit, and they make such amazing games. It's the most frustrating thing.

Do you have specific work space when writing? How do you balance between work and the kids?

I just posted my schedule, and I try to stick to it when possible and get out and have fun on the weekends. I have an office in the basement, but honestly I usually work out of my daughter's room just so I'm closer to the youngest kids during the day. I'm too social to be stuck in the basement.

So what are we REALLY going to do about gg types? Can we crowdsource bounty hunters or something? I picture something like the end of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. (Mostly joking. Mostly.)

Assholes were around before the hash tag, and they'll be around way after it. We need better tools for dealing with them on social media, and the police have to figure out a way to prosecute credible threats.

Describe A Typical Day In Your Life?

Kole Miller
Wake up at 6, make sure my oldest son is up, my wife drives him to school, make sure the next two kids are up and dressed, make breakfast for the two youngest kids, start work at 9, work until 5 or 6, make dinner, help with homework, do baths, kids go to sleep between 7 and 10 p.m. depending on age, play an hour or two of games, read a bit, to go bed, repeat.

If I'm attending GDC for the first time as a journalism student, what would you say is a good mix of hunting down stories (aside from obvious things like awards) and networking with other journalists and developers?

Stories during the day, network at night. Actually, always be doing both. Never stop. Ask for every card. Introduce yourself to everyone, but be respectful of people's time. Go to mixers and events. Stories are everywhere, and so are cool people to meet. It's a target rich environment. :-)
