Why do zombies attack?
let's be real here, there actually is a fungus that can control ants and it wouldn't surprise me if there would be one that could control other species as well that we just haven't discovered yet. so zombies would attack because this fungus is controlling people's brains and making them do whatever it takes to survive, mainly because the fungus wants to survive to reproduce in other perfect ecosystems - aka heated bodies full of the right amount of moisture - so it would transmit from person to person.
imagine athlete's foot but in the brain, however it has adapted to automatically invade the brain and without realizing it has since it doesn't have a brain of it's own. the fungus probably destroyed the areas of the neurological system in the host body devoted to memories, intelligence, and other intellectual skills humans have that other animals, per say dogs, don't have. this would lead to the host no longer recognizing humans as part of the same species, and would try to kill them out of competition while spreading the fungus without realizing it - sort of like dogs spreading fleas or diseases unintentionally.
boom - the result is a zombie apocalypse. i hope you liked my explanation, it actually is a real thing for ants in rainforests to be controlled by the fungus even if temporarily and new strands of dna can emerge and lead it to other species. it makes some sense and i'm not completely crazy, right? nvn
