Depends on the type of suffering. It may teach you something, but no one likes to suffer.
If your long term partner had a problem to the point of constant anxiety with a new friend of yours of the opposite sex would you get rid of the friend or just make your partner deal with it?
Do you love and care for your partner? If you do, you will respect your partners feelings. If your new friend respects you, she will keep her distance and be respectful to you and yours and do what's right.
I have been in this situation with a guy friend before. His girlfriend obviously felt a certain way about me and wasn't having it. I could feel this and I told my guy friend that I respect him and I don't know what his girl thinks of me, but I would like to stay away so it doesn't bother her. I told him I would always be there for him as a friend, but I didn't want to hang out. He was mad and said that will not happen. He obviously didn't respect her feelings, eventually they broke up.
