So does a longer axle in a throw actually make it more durable and "tougher"? The older Dif-e-yos had thick and long axles, and they could be destroyed without gaining vibe, where I've seen some throws like the Horizon (no offense) gain vibe from a small impact.

They were generally thicker everywhere. Less rim weight, thicker walls. They also weren't really smooth to begin with. So yes, we could make more durable lower performance yoyos but that is the trade off.

Does the quality of your anodization vary from yoyo to yoyo? My Pulsar Superstar has smacked my wedding ring so many times and it has barely left a scratch, but my Shutter has too and it has small scratches in it.

Anodize does vary yes. As do the metals used in production.
