What do you think about BDSM, as in consensual fetish enjoyment?

Have fun and be safe with whatever you're into!

>Ufotable choosing to show Sella/Leysritt this episode. :\

I'm not sure why you're complaining about this to me. I don't really have any investment in the changes of UBW versus the source material, considering I haven't read the VN route.

Have you read Oyasumi Punpun? Do you see any chance of it ever getting adapted into anime? Would you like to watch one?

Haven't, but plan to.

In regards to a previous ask, what makes you think the anime fandom is far more progressive than the gaming community? The MAL community at least seems to consist of typical people ranting about SJWs for example.

I'm guessing MAL slants particularly young and male, both of which tend to increase the appearance of "those damn SJWs!" speech among nerd communities. It feels like the community is more diverse elsewhere.
Could be wrong, though. Maybe anime fandom is just as bad - you certainly run into a lot of awful people on twitter with anime avatars.

Do you just dislike Kirino, or consider her a bad character? As you said yourself there's a difference between a character being likeable and being good. As much as Kirino is a spoiled, tsundere, Mary-Sue she brings up interesting issues about being an anime-fan and balancing that with real life.

Eh, I don't really think she does. The show isn't interested in actually challenging Kirino, or portraying a meaningful balance of fandom and real life - it just rewards her for being an obsessive, narcissistic, maladjusted otaku. And then the show says "but also she's a successful and well-liked person!", but we don't get to see any of that, or how it reflects other elements of her personality. Kirino's a bad person, bad character, bad message, and bad show.

What's the funniest manga you've ever read?

Yotsuba and Azumanga Daioh, I guess? I haven't found many manga I find funny.

Have you ever had a GG-related falling out within the anime fandom?

Maybe? A hardline conservative dude who used to follow me unfollowed me for /something/ back around when GG started. But it could also have been me panning the first episode of Cross Ange or something, I never knew what the actual cause was.

What did you think of the GoT TV series changing Tyrions backstory?

I don't even remember what they changed, so I'm guessing I was fine with it. I've been very impressed with how they've tightened and rearranged the story in general to both better fit television and just flow better as a story - the only thing I can remember being specifically unimpressed with was how they adapted Daenerys's story in S2, along with that season's overall kinda rushed pacing. But the show has improved since then, and now feels extremely confident.

Hey, Bob, is it okay for me to ask you what you got out of One Hundred Years of Solitude? I'm about a fifth of the way through it now, but I really don't seem able to glean anything from it: Not in an "it's bad" sense, but in an "I can't engage with any of this well" sense. Am I just not ready?

Sophia
It's basically an absurdly gorgeous collection of five hundred fables that have all been somehow gracefully woven into one continuous narrative, with little reflections on the nature of time or human tragedy scattered throughout. I connected with it more as, I dunno, a beautiful song than a strict narrative.

have you seen the new Fate UBW episode? I'm so excited for next week, things are picking up!!!

Yeah, it was pretty fun. I wasn't that engaged by Medea's backstory, but the second half really picked up, and this should be an awesome fight.

Favourite Lovecraft story?

Hmmm. The one that comes to mind is At the Mountains of Madness, though The Colour Out of Space is also up there. I'd have to read them again.

Do you think a GatorGate-style event could erupt in the anime community? A prolonged militant push across websites / blogging / Twitter / etc to harass, dox, or otherwise flush out various writers, voices, or so on in an effort to "save anime" from more nuanced critique?

It might be too late for that - anime fandom on the whole already seems more accepting of progressive views than gaming culture. GG gained traction in large part because gaming culture has always had a strong conservative and male-centric bent.

Hey bob, are you going to be watching Knights of Sidonia this season?

Nope. I like the show, and will probably return to it at some point, but I just do not have time for a single extra show. I still need to cut some, I'm watching too much.

With regards to the previous question, how would you critique for example Fate Stay/Night VN's writing? I mean it's just plain bad isn't it?

Things can be bad for a variety of reasons, and it doesn't really tell people much if you say it's "just bad" - you need to say more to clarify what elements of the text interact poorly with your perception of good writing. In Fate's case, I'd probably talk about the overwrought sentence structure/word choices, the way the language often fails to convey its information effectively (in a way that honestly seems likely to have been introduced in translation by someone who isn't particularly great at English), and the tremendous amount of extraneous description and conversation that doesn't actually help the narrative. Fate reads like Rikka Takanashi describing every single event of her day in order in Japanese, and that text then being awkwardly translated into English.

Do you think the competition between the houses in Game of Thrones and the whole 'Winter is Coming' thing is an allegory for how political struggles between parties in America prevents the country from being prepared for major threats, like climate change?

It doesn't have to be an allegory for America specifically - it's a truth of political brinkmanship that's been relevant across human history.

Is "boring" a bad word to use in criticism? Like, do you think people should try to more gracefully articulate a lack of personal interest?

Personally I don't find it to be a particularly useful one - saying "I didn't like it because it was boring" doesn't seem far removed from "I didn't like it because it was bad." It doesn't really say much by itself.

Will we get a Bloodbourne livestream before you're finished with the game?

Damnit I hope so. All I really need now is to figure out how to set up a microphone for it - the TV is down a floor from my computer, so I might have to use one of my housemate's laptops or something so I can actually talk. It's a work in progress.

Personally, I think you should feel complimented that so many random people care about your opinion so much that they feel threatened by you not agreeing with them

Eh, they'd likely do it for anyone with a reasonably sized platform who disagreed with them. The people who scream at Anita Sarkeesian aren't doing it out of respect.

Would you vote for Rom the Vacuous Spider in an election if the opponent was someone whose policies you disagreed with?

Rom gets a bad rap for his acid-spitting minions and spirit meteors, but at least he doesn't believe in the invisible hand of the market. He's got my vote.

I just wanted to say thanks for all of your essays and your patience with ask.fm. To make a long story short, I basically used to be Hachiman, and your essays have really helped me challenge my own perspectives and try to be a better person in general.

I'm really happy to hear that! Thanks for letting me know.

Anti TM-army?? UFO ruined UBW?? honestly, i'm just so confused. I played the VN (and loved it), but I dont see how UFO ruined UBW in the slightest. Also since when was there an anti TM army? On behalf of all the sane TM fans, I genuinely apologise for the actions of these people. Sorry about them

Haha, thanks.

Have you heard anything about the older hunter x hunter anime? Is it as good as the newer one?

I've heard that it's actually often beautiful and a bit darker stylistically than the new one. I'm not really interested in watching a second run of the same story, though.
