Why is there no electricity? If the laws of electromagnetism changed so it didn't work, then everything would die almost immediately. If we lost the infrastructure for it (due to an apocalypse) I'd be able to make it, but would likely have other concerns first.

Counting is good, especially odd counting, like backwards from 9423 by 7's. It gives your brain something to do that is task specific and somewhat complicated, but not important.
