in chinese there are 4 tones Mā (1) , má (2), mǎ (3), mà(4) so when writing them, whatever tone the word has, you just write the number after it. In madarin (chinese) the word Mā means mum, but the word mǎ means horse. the word differs by the way you pronounce it.
