the boy didn't try to breathe ⏤ somehow, it wasn't necessary. however, he tried to move his limbs; everything felt stiff because of the coldness. after limbering up a little, jack tried to swim ⏤ he wanted to reach the surface of the water, no matter how hard it was to get there. not knowing if it was seconds, minutes or even hours, jack emerged from the darkness of the ocean, blinded by the sunlight.
