In a question to me you mentioned the book "Decline and Fall of the British Aristocracy" by David Cannadine which you mentioned speaks of how the decline of the aristocracy in Britain went hand-in-hand with the decline of the society. Could you tell me more about the book? Thanks. :-)
An excellent review is to be found here

I am especially interested in the way very early in the Industrial Revolution, aristocrats were actually among the main beneficiaries; they owned the land on which mines, canals etc could be established and had the capital for railways, factories and so on.
Next month I look forward to visiting http://www.ectonmine.org which was owned by the Dukes of Devonshire and is a perfect example of this early process, which later petered out.
But they later lost ground and David Cannadine explains how and why.
