Besides physical injury, trauma can be described as a deeply distressing experience. I would include the idea that the experience changes your worldview in some way. Anyone is capable of experiencing trauma, but not everyone will.

Because animals have identifiable sexes. We use "it" when we don't know. Pronouns in the singular tend to be gendered in use.
