AoA Sheikh, I hate to ask a super stupid question, but which site do you think we can reliably find out if the moon has been sighted in the world for the start of dhul hijjah?

Any two reliable Muslims seeing it by naked eye anywhere on earth, or any reliable news site that reports that.

I get a lot of mucus due to allergies/sensitivities etc. When i fast i keep spitting it out but it makes me like fasting less and it's not possible to spit out 100% of it. Is it permissible for me to follow the opinion that swallowing mucus does not break the fast due to this hardship i have?

Swallowing mucus doesn't break your fast unless if it comes out of your throat to your mouth, then you swallow it back again intentionally.
Take anti histamine + good honey at suhoor, recite Qur'an over water and drink it and it will help inshaAllah.

Eh, are the Majed Jarrar that your possible brother, Khalid, who I've chatted with for a very long time, might have recommended to me?

You mean there's a possibility Khalid isn't my brother afterall? Yay!

I want to know what are the odds of raising Muslim children in western societies. I hear a lot of bad news about family issues and that my kids can lose their language and then their religion. Someone has told me that my progeny will be absolutely Kuffar If I chose to live in Canada, W do U think?

The single largest impact on the children's faith, identity and character comes from home.
Having said that, a careless father and a negligent mother who leave their kids to pick up their identity off the street, is dangerous whether you're in Riyadh or Las Vegas.
I know stories, personally, of righteous men and women in the middle east whose children do drugs, others have walked away and told them they want to be atheists.
These stories, along with stories you were told, are red herrings. The majority of Muslim families that immigrate to North America become closer to the Masjid. Those who never sent their kids to study at the mosque in their home countries suddenly realize the faith and identity of their children is not taken for granted anymore, and start putting their kids in Islamic schools and weekend programs at the mosque.
Understandably, it takes a village to raise a child, so wherever you decide to reside, it is your primary responsibility to educate your child, including choosing the right friends and teachers for them.

Is a marriage valid without the walima (only with nikkah)?

Marriage is about doing the best you can to your spouse. Like most videogames, it will not run well and will definitely not be enjoyable if you only have minimum requirements.
If you're inclined to ask what's the least you could do to get away with a relationship, whether it's in the wedding or later on in marriage... You're not ready yet for marriage.

I have memorised the Quran and now want to study the deen. What book should I memorise? I've been recommended to memorise Umdatul Ahkam or Bulugh Al Maraam.

It depends on your age, goals and where you live. Pm me on Facebook.

I know this is a strange question that perhaps doesn't have a clear answer but how do you become the wali of Allah and how do you know that you are His wali?

Every believer is a wali of Allah. They differ in their degrees of wilaaya according to their righteousness.
Allah defined The awliyaa as: "those who believed and have been righteous"

I want to marry an iraqi woman , she really fullfils me but iam a bit concerned since shi is shiite ,, Is it halal to marry her ?

It doesn't matter what the beliefs of her family are, what matters is her own. If you think she will be the righteous wife for you, and the excellent mother for your children, then marry her.
You will be held accountable by your children on the day of judgement before the Almighty on your selection for their mother, so choose wisely.

Salam Sheikh, I have a class that after daylight savings will span from 30 mins before Maghreb until about 5 minutes before Isha (from calculation). How early should I leave to pray since the calculations in winter are apparently off by a window (I have no idea what the margin of error is). JAK

The minute it calls Maghreb, go to pray.

Assalamu alaykum ustadh. Will a dead Muslim benefit from his/her janaza prayer even tho those praying it are not righteous? I mean people who have deviant beliefs, do lesser shirk or even major shirk, identify as communists/secularists or deny some ahadith that they dont like, or oppress etc?

If 40 Muslims in a janaza sincerely ask the Almighty for forgiveness for the deceased, He will accept them as intercessors for the deceased.
This is not exclusive to the righteous.

Salam Sheikh, do you happen to know where Sh Bajabir is located/teaches?

He's a professor in King Abdulaziz university in Jeddah. One of the pillars of Hanbali Fiqh in this time.

A teacher in an Islamic class said that the reason Hanafi madhab follows weaker ahadith is because the regions where the madhab sprouted were too far away from the centre of Islam and so the distance was a problem, and they practiced based on hadith they learned, which was usually weak. Thoughts?

That's half true, the Hanafi mathhab is the most strict of all four mathhab on requirements to accept a hadeeth, because it developed in a hostile environment of hadeeth fabrication.
So the reason is true but everything else is the opposite.

Is it rude to ask someone to return money you lent them? I am not sure if their family is still in need, but I know the wife opened a business, but I'm not sure if she keeps the money for herself (since she has a right to). My family needs the money and it's been several years...

The lender has the right to request their money back anytime, even before the term ends. The lender is required to make that money available immediately, even by lending if they had to.
The Prophet said: a rich merchant used to lend people money. If one of them delayed in paying back he'd say to his employees, forgive his delay, may God forgive us. When He died, God forgave him.
God encourages the lender to give more time for borrowers in difficulty, but if you're in difficulty then there's no blame on you.

Asalamu Alykum. Quick question regarding the study of the Madhab: which of the shorter texts is the one you relied upon the most, which one is your personal favorite, and which one do you recommend for me to start with/memorize (the five main ones: Umdah, Akhsar, Zad, Dalil, & Kafi)? Jzk.

Ammar Abdulhaleem
Bias disclaimer: I studied only two of these with scholars, read the other three on my own.
Objectively speaking, the daleel is the best written work of these five, in terms of accuracy and language. It is also the most underappreciated one among them, and has had rare explanations. If you find a scholar near you who is explaining it, don't let go of them.
Having said that, Zad is the most popular manual of these five, it has issues, but it was explained by the most epic explanation in the entire mathhab, the Rawdh, which is taught everywhere on earth today.
In accuracy and language of the manual itself, I'd rank them: Dalil, Umdah, Akhsar, Zad then Kafi
In availability and popularity: Zad, Akhsar, Umdah, Dalil, Kafi
In length (from shortest/ least rulings): Akhsar, Umdah, Dalil, Kafi, Zad.
If you do the Zad with an excellent Sheikh, you can go on the shorter ones on your own and learn some differences.
If you just want to learn the basics of Fiqh, just pick any. If you want to specialize in Hanbali Fiqh, you'll need to study the five and memorize at least one of them.

Did the mutazilis follow a madhab? I know a staunch Hanafi who claims to be mutazili and believes they are very compatible?

The mu'tazila is one of the four most deviant ideologies in history of Islam. It died off many centuries ago, but neo-Mutazila are being revived in this century mainly by secularism.
As any other deviant ideology, they either rely on mainstream Sunni scholars to driving rulings, or develop their own.
Mu'tazila had their own mathhab, which sometimes favoured human logic over scripture, for that their rulings, ironically, did not make much sense. That's why some relied on Sunni Hanafi scholars for rulings because, literally, they didn't know how to wipe their own butts without them.
Imam Abu Hanifa said: whoever says there's no God above the heavens, is an apostate; and whoever says I don't know if God is above the heavens or not, is an apostate.
(Both are statements of mu'tazila.)
So much for compatibility right there.

Sheikh is it wajib to do the eclipse prayer or sunnah?

You should never ask this kind of questions, especially if the intent is: I'm only doing it if it's obligatory. That is the attitude of the worst types of slaves.
As for the pious believers, they would rush and compete to do anything that draws them nearer to their Lord.
