If I say it only takes 6 months to learn and play on the violin, will you believe me?
It is said that the violin is the hardest instrument to learn, and you should learn it when you are still a kid. I disagree. I started the violin since I was 22 and it only took me 6 months to be able to play. And I know nothing about music before! Sure, I wouldn’t be able to play as nice as a professional, or as those who have learned the violin for a long time. But still, I can play my favorite songs.
Based on my experience, if you know nothing about music or haven’t played any instruments before, below is what you can achieve after 6 months .
Know how to read music notes and play simple modern songs accordingly. You can play “All I have to do is dream”, “Twinkle, twinkle little star”, “Happy birthday”, and any other songs that you have the music sheet. Depends on your skills, pick the music sheet at your level. You won’t be able to play classical music at this point.
You can play the note nice and clear, but you won’t be able to apply many techniques (as you haven’t learned that many techniques!). Hence, the sound you create might not convey much emotion. But don’t worry! A little bit more time and you’ll be able to play like those violinists you have listened to you Youtube.
What do you need to be able to play after 6 months ?
2 hours per day. Consistently. If you’re busy on certain days, you can make up for it the next day. And Sunday? You can rest! :) A decent violin. Many people started playing the violin, thinking that they should buy a cheap violin, in case they… quit! There is nothing wrong with that. But I think if you started something, and thinking there is a possibility that you might quit it, it will be easier for you to be slacking off. There isn’t enough determination. Not mention the mindset, buying a cheap violin has its other negative sides. The sound from a cheap violin isn’t that nice and accurate.
