Did you know Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbor Totoro were supposed to play as a double feature?

I did not! Jeez that would be a very emotional double feature!

What do you think about hip hop diss tracks?

Usually they are attention getting trash. Sometimes, ('Takeover,' 'No Vaseline') they are good enough songs on their own to stand the test of time. Rappers calling each other out and pushing one another to greater heights can be thrilling, but usually it's at best peacockery, and at worst it leads to actual violence. I've always been ambivalent about them as a fan of rap music.

Thoughts on the new show ballers?

I've always had a fondness for The Rock, but that show is just dull as dishwater. Entourage meets Arli$$, which... no thanks.

Well, sure. But it's annoying to hear 1989 in particular framed as this perfect pop album when only 4 or 5 of the songs are used to back that up. I guess narratives override in that way.

Regardless, the perfect pop album of the year is E*MO*TION, everybody knows that! ;)

Do you think critics have a tendency to justify their favorable opinion of a record by highlighting its best songs and ignoring the rest? Recent examples: 1989, Settle.

I mean, critics have always done that. Art is subjective so you're never going to get a "perfect" logical review, right?

What is that statue like thing in the stairwell on top of the Adult Swim building in Midtown ATL? Looks like a ghost.

Whether it be Goku or Solid Snake, we have all these fictional, specific heroes that have personally & legitimately inspired us to never give up through life. Did you ever have any one of those guys/gals in your younger days that still holds up today?

Christian Villagomez
I mean, I'm older than you so all of my heroes have now thoroughly permeated the popular monoculture. Growing up, my heroes were Han Solo, Spidey, Aragorn, Batman, etc. And there's a whole sideline there for Clint Eastwood characters, too. I'm old.

I've come around to FKA twigs. Really like her new EP, but didn't think much of the album except for "Two Weeks". 20-minute EP's instead of albums suit her better. She's better in short bursts imo. What do you think?

Twigs is great, I personally enjoy watching her as a performer more than, like, sitting around and listening to her music. I think there's a reason she creates so many short films and pays so much attention to performance. It seems to me her interests might lie more in the creation of an interesting persona through which she can explore her ideas, than being a pure "musician." I don't find myself reaching for her music often, but there's no doubt she is creating her own space and she will continue to be interesting. I find myself watching her short films more than listening to her music, even though I think the music is very good.

What do you think about The Weeknd's recent move towards pop appeal?

Doesn't bug me. I'm less interested in him now than I was when he dropped his trilogy of mixtapes. I felt the fatigue many critics expressed upon the release of his first album was overblown, but there's no question he was mining the same vein to less effect. This new record is a good attempt at pushing his sound forward a bit, which I think he needs.

What are some overlooked movies gems from the 90's to you?

MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO
THE REFLECTING SKIN
RATCATCHER
MIAMI BLUES
AFTER DARK, MY SWEET
THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT
RED ROCK WEST
SWIMMING WITH SHARKS
DARK CITY
and many more.

are you looking forward to ash vs the evil dead at all?

I actually am. Fargo, Hannibal and (to a lesser degree) Twelve Monkeys and Bates Motel have proven to me that sequels/prequels/side stories can work, so I'm gonna go in with an open mind. The awesome trailer and the stories about their use of practical efx have given me a bit of hope it will be fun.

Do you have any advice on how to develop connections? I love you.

Thank you! I assume you mean PROFESSIONAL connections. So that's where I'll start. I think the best way to make professional connections is to politely reach out to those whose work you admire and send them any work of your own. Don't expect them to hit you back, don't bug them, but at the same time, don't be afraid to reach out. I've found that reaching out in a cool way will often help someone remember you, and once they do, if they remember you as being cool, that's a great first step. You could also try attending panels, industry events and job fairs, or see people in your field speak and try to speak with them after. Constantly looking for opportunities is more likely to yield one. Good luck!

Ice Cube & Eminem have both had probably the greatest winning streaks that any rapper has ever had in their early career, both financially & critically. Are there any artists since then you think have been able to match that kind of success?

Kanye has surpassed both of them.

Have you heard about how the character designer for spike spiegel came to Cartoon Network and drew a pencil sketch of him on their wall? Did you also know that an intern drew a cartoon kid doodle all over it recently as well?

Yes and yes. And ppl use that little story as evidence ppl at CN don't "care" about anime. As if everyone follows every intern around and knows every move. Don't really care about that story tbh.

Do you know what the ending of cowboy bebop means? It's been bothering me for years. The line that confuses me is "You're Going to Carry That Weight" I don't get it!

"We're gonna carry that weight-- the weight that is at once the load of our past and also the promise and burden of unrealized hopes and aspirations for the future-- the future Spike never had a chance with. As Shinichiro Watanabe once revealed about this line taken from the last Beatles's album, "The meaning behind that phrase, since the Beatles took a lot of weight from the fans, was that the fans had to now carry that weight."

"They fly around the internet" that's the term used to refer to fans? Did Toonami just throw shade at fans?

"We fly around in a spaceship, they fly around the Internet" that you would derive from that sentence that Toonami throws shade on our fans blows my mind. My advice to you is: relax, kid. Stop looking for a fight where one doesn't exist.
