What's most important for a trial to get right?
Honestly? Creativity. A willingness to experiment with everything, whether it works or not. Even if a trial is an absolute failure, as long as the author can look at it and say "okay, this didn't work for me and this did..." and whatnot, that's all that matters. All that matters with a trial is writing something unique that you want to see, and learning from those experiments to better your unique writing style.

You can have one thing: Super motivation, all the sprites/art you need, or a ton of mystery ideas. Which do you choose
Super motivation. If you're motivated you can work past anything. Sprites? There's always someone else for that! Or just use placeholders! Art? Hi, Zerochan and BG packs and whatnot. Mystery ideas? It doesn't have to be a mystery, for one, but more importantly you don't have to panic about having a great trick. As long as you have a great story.
