Well, there is one theory that says we change all 7 years drastically.
I'd say we change every day - after many, many people and experience we get in touch with, we don't stay the same. We evolve with the knowledge we observe.

I'd say it's a mix of both.
Too many losses can break one's character to the point that one will lose all faith in the world. Too much gain will make one feel invincible & untouchable, their arrogance increase and they lose all touch to earth. Which would make them toxic as heck. So, staying down to earth is what seems to be the best option.

I try to overcome it by myself. And stop communicating - or I'll hurt people. If I don't do that I definitely have my trouble to control my negative emotions. There are just a few people who can deal with my flaws and I highly appreciate them in my life.
