What does it mean to be independent?

To me it's fulfilling these 3:
1. You know how to take care of yourself. What to do when you're feeling ill, when people try to scam you, when you need to present your work to your boss, when your lightbulb dies, etc.
2. You know how to form your own opinions and defend your stand, rather than just following the majority, some iconic figure or the mass media. It's okay to be inspired, but don't be blinded.
3. You can afford to buy your needs and wants without having to use someone else's money.
(Long way to go for me, especially for number one. I even had to Google how to install a door latch when mine was broken. I KNOW... So embarrassing.)

josephine! can you return a favour and recommend some good graphic novels for the summer? I dont read fantasy and japanese graphic novels though... perhaps something in the line of persepolis? :3 thanks!

GeraldSim’s Profile PhotoGerald Sim
Dang, the two genres that you don't read are the two genres that I read the most! Hahaha. This is tough.
Hmm, for summer reading I'd suggest:
1. French Milk by Lucy Krisley -> I feel that I am a bit biased towards this book because it emphasizes mother-daughter relationship and there are many drawings of food here.
2. Blankets by Craig Thompson
3. Anya's Ghost by Vera Brosgol -> to me fantasy doesn't include horror/supernatural, and anyway, this one is rather cute...
4. This One Summer by Mariko & Jillian Tamaki
Because it's "summer" I tried to choose the ones that are rather lighthearted and fun to read, rather than heavy. I assume for your last sentence, you're referring to the art style? The books I mentioned above have rather cartoony/stylized art style just like Persepolis.
I really need to read more graphic novels, though. It's getting difficult to pick stuff. 8D;;
I always love culture related questions though, so, anytime! :>

Your favorite tv commercial? (Pick one)

resideriana’s Profile PhotoResi
I have several categories for favorites... (even though to be honest I don't really know a lot of ads, not a TV person)
Most Touching:
http://youtu.be/MwQiuh_RUUwJoaru’s Video 116194668425 MwQiuh_RUUwJoaru’s Video 116194668425 MwQiuh_RUUw
I don't even like FFX and X-2, but this video is a solid proof that video game scores are as good as films. Yeah, I am actually pissed whenever I told someone that "this game has great soundtrack" and they always underestimate it just because it's from a game.
Most Hilarious:

I think people will judge my sense of humor for choosing this but it never fails to make me laugh so hard, especially with the (intentionally) bad VFX. 8'))))))
So Gorgeous That You'd Watch It Again Just For The Sake of It:

CGfied Audrey Hepburn. The blinking actually gives it away that she's a CG, but it's still nice to look at.
Best with Natalie Portman (lol):

What's your favorite memory of your life so far?

When I treated my parents and sister for dinner with my first paycheck. :> It wasn't much but I felt so happy because I never bought my parents anything with my allowance (it's their money so there's no point in my opinion lol) and they didn't allow me to work/do business when before university life. So I finally took this chance to give them something!
My mom was so happy that she brought home the bill and framed it in our house in Indonesia. Hahaha. My mom is so cute!

If you could decide, how, where, when would you like to die?

Cause I'm a human who wants everything nice and smooth, I'd love to die in my sleep. When I'm home, with my loved ones around me.
As for when, maybe it's when I have nothing I can give for this world anymore. But I hope this happens after my family passed away, otherwise there won't be anyone to take care of them...
Dang, this is actually scary, that's why I was quite afraid of answering it. Haha. Only Olivia can come up with such questions... XD

Have you read adrian tomine? and omg persepolis was so good. ive read all three volumes and watched the movie. unforgettable :)

GeraldSim’s Profile PhotoGerald Sim
Oh! I have seen his illustrations in the New Yorker but I didn't know that he wrote comics too. I'll go check him out! Thank you for the suggestion :D :D Yay!
Hi-five for Persepolis! The one I have is a compilation (The Complete Persepolis) :> To me the stories were quite relevant because the beginning reminds me of 1998 in Indonesia. I can also relate to her stories when she was living overseas alone... It's a book full of things that I can relate to. ><

Are you scared of the dark?

I became scared of the dark because of this horror game called Lurking.
http://youtu.be/u8830S_Pa-kJoaru’s Video 116099572361 u8830S_Pa-kJoaru’s Video 116099572361 u8830S_Pa-k
It's free for download, both Mac and Windows. If you have Oculus Rift, there's a Rift version too.
Basically you don't really have sight in this game, everything is pitch black. You see things by making sounds (throwing objects around or speak to your mic, but you don't have to use a mic to play this game). But if you make sounds, your enemies would be able to detect you. DUN DUN DUN. SO HOW ARE YOU GONNA GET TO THE END?!
Pewdiepie himself did a gameplay video recently!

Thank you for your awesome question :)) And omg you've met Neil Gaiman :O how's that feel? And idk if you already had this question before but would you give me list of your fav graphic novel? Thanks :)

resideriana’s Profile PhotoResi
When I met Neil Gaiman, I was so nervous that I stuttered so badly, but Neil was so nice that he waited patiently until I finish my sentence. Definitely one of the best moments in my life! :)
Don't worry, I'm still new here so I haven't answered a lot of questions. xD;; I don't read a lot of graphic novels (I assume that you're referring to the non-Japanese ones) but some of my faves would be (in no particular order):
1. Good-bye, Chunky Rice by Craig Thompson
2. Lost & Found by Shaun Tan
3. V for Vendetta by Alan Moore and David Llyod
4. Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons
5. Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland
6. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller
7. Sandman by Neil Gaiman and a lot of artists. All of them. LOL.
8. Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi -> I think most Indonesians should read this. It talks a lot about racism and prejudice. There's also an animation adaptation if you're not into books.
Although I am a visual person, I actually choose these based on the story rather than the art. I think art is just a communication device. Kayak smartphone, iPhone sama Samsung kan beda packaging aja, tapi sama-sama bisa buat SMS, socmed dan telpon. :B The important part is the content, what is being delivered... Hahaha.
I am also a loyal follower of Malaysian artist Hwei Lin Lim. I have four of her self-published graphic novels (Drops in the Ocean, Dear Wonderful World, Please Love Me Again, Our Glorious Deeds). But I like her work so much that if I include her in the list, she'll be dominating. Hahaha. She is one of my biggest influences, please look up for her when you have the time. :> Her blog is http://lalage.tumblr.com/ (SHE ALSO LOVES BIG BANG, HOW COOL IS DAT)
(and everyone knows now that I'm a big fan of Alan Moore...)
Thanks for this awesome question, Resi! And nice to know you!
If anyone wants to recommend me any titles, feel free to do so! :>

pap your weapon of choices for drawing

Re-answered. I used VR yesterday cause I wanted to show you the tip of each pen/brush, but it caused some mess...
From L-R:
1. Pentel Eraser.
2. Pilot 0.5 Mechanical Pencil. Lead is from any brand, softness ranges from 2B - 4B.
3. Zebra Brush Pen. I think this is the medium tip but I'm not sure...
4. Tombow Graphite Pencil 4B. I also use 6B and 8B, depending on paper size. (The bigger the paper, the darker I want my lines to be)
5. Tombow Play Color 2 Marker in Brown. I mainly use the finer tip for underdrawing + detailing, and the bolder tip for outline + filling.
6. Copic Sketch in Orientale. Mainly used for blocking shadows in sketches. Alcohol based so it's very useful.
7. Wacom Intuos 4 for my digital drawings. I use a setting that makes my brush looks like pencil on paper, and another one that's closer to ink.
I also use Sumi ink and a painting brush for my drawings, but I left them at school cause I mainly use them in figure drawing sessions. They're easier to use when standing up. XD;;
Thank you for asking this, Ge! I like this kind of questions~
(To others: I also posted a picture of my workspace yesterday, scroll ahead!)

kaaak saya suka gambar, tapi saya lebih sering gambar dari gambar orang, lebih ke meniru gitu sih. tapi saya pgn bisa gambar kayak kakaaak!!! gimana caranya??? hehe

algilagii’s Profile PhotoAl Ghifari
Buat yang lain, jangan panggil kak, ya. Panggil nama aja nggak apa-apa. 8')) Akoh macih muda... /plek/

What do you think about CLAMP? :3

I like most of their work except for Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles...
My most favorites are (in no particular order): Tokyo Babylon, Angelic Layer, Cardcaptor Sakura, Clamp School Detectives, RG Veda. Their short stories and their one-shot tankoubons are good, too. :)
I haven't read Kobato (the latest work I think), and most of their pre-debut works (except for Cluster). I also haven't read most of their works that were not published in a tankoubon. (It's really hard to find manga-magazines outside of Japan)
What I like about CLAMP:
- In CLAMP stories, they are not afraid to kill off characters and once these characters are dead, they're dead. I like it because that's just how deaths are supposed to be. If everyone can come back to life again, death becomes much less of a punishment/ritual pain for the characters.
- CLAMP is very consistent in one thing: little to no screentones. They practically draw anything, from characters to the smallest prop in the background. So much effort, but it does make their books worth the gold.
- CLAMP likes to study materials before 'distorting' it for their stories. You can see that they really did their research, and not just dump things in to make it 'cool'. And their works are generally heavy on cultural elements.
That being said, CLAMP is not one of my artistic influences, so I can't really say much about their art except that their outfits tend to looks so grandeur. xD;;

Josephine, kalau game fighting suka gak? Kalau suka: 1) apa 10 game fighting favoritmu? 2) Kita harus sparring suatu saat nanti :)

erdiawan’s Profile PhotoErdiawan
Nggak. Hehe. Soalnya nggak sigap, refleksnya jelek.
Nggak sampai 10 judul kayaknya game fighting yang aku tahu (palingan cuma Tekken, Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive, King of Fighters, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Marvel VS CAPCOM...), tapi aku sempet suka sama game fighting Bloody Roar 4, soalnya nggak terlalu susah.
Haha kalau kita sparring aku cuma jadi sandsack.......
Josephine kalau game fighting suka gak Kalau suka 1 apa 10 game fighting

I just had avocado + gula aren to close my dinner with! <3 It's my favorite avocado-based shake, cause it's sweet but not as sweet as avocado + chocolate condensed milk.

What is your fictional criminal organization/gang and why?

Alkupra’s Profile PhotoAlkupra
I'd rather operate alone because it's easier to run away when you are detached. :b
But if I have to choose, I'd be Hannibal's partner in crime. C'mon, he's all about manners, culture and (literally sinful) gastronomy. I can't possibly ask for more class than this!
