Do you think parents who choose not to vaccinate their children should be "punished" by restricted access to healthcare, reduced support for childcare or any other means? Why?

invogliare’s Profile Photoمنيره العازمي
I don't think they should be punished but vaccination should be compulsory as in fairly obvious ways, it affects their children and everyone else's if they aren't vaccinated.
The anti-vaxxers make me angry and disgusted, as their leaders tell lies and their followers don't care enough to find out the truth.
Specifically in how they say vaccines cause autism, as if the spectrum (which I'm on) were a curse rather than a difference which is a difference but can lead to something positive that neurotypical people don't have, if sensitively handled.
And they also think that rather than being an innate condition which is just a state of being, it's something that can and should be done away with if only people reject science.
It's also dismaying to think that this new wave of nationalism/populism/wilful ignorance in Europe and America is willing to flirt with this; while the leaders may not believe in the anti-vaxxer message, they evidently find it useful to spread conspiracy theories about everything (except Russia, whose rulers are to be believed on everything).

When I’m on Insta or FB, if I like a post I usually click “like” on it. But if I see that it already has 12,456 likes or whatever, I often don’t ... it seems to me like a futile gesture. I know that may sound odd. But does anyone else not “like” posts that already have tens of thousands of likes?

CactusDoug’s Profile PhotoDoug
I know what you mean but I like (as in click on the like button) for anything that I like (ie agree with, appreciate aesthetically, find valuable/interesting/informative).
In the unlikely event that something I like became popular I'd be glad, as long as the artist's vision wasn't compromised.

Do you prefer to use cash or payment card?

Cash is king, I use my debit card to get cash out of a cash machine and then spend it in a way I can keep track of. I don't like how my spending can be traced by the bank, government etc when it's done by card or online, of course I do some of that but as little as possible.
Also I don't have that much money so I try to minimise the direct debits I have as too many coming in all at once can push me into the red, so in the shop it's all about notes & coins if it all possible.

Do you have any interests or hobbies that could be considered unusual? For example I quite enjoy locksport (legal lockpicking) and a friend of mine enjoys dog spotting

RidgeBackRogue’s Profile PhotoRidgeBack Rogue
I don't know what is usual, but I get blank looks when I say downloading lectures from https://www.thegreatcourses.co.uk is one of my favourite thing to do, so I'm sad to say that isn't widely shared.
I certainly don't deliberately do obscure things, I'd prefer if my stuff was popular but it usually isn't! Only that website is a terrific resource for learning.

In your opinion, should HIV-positive individuals be held responsible for not disclosing their HIV serostatus to their partners?

invogliare’s Profile Photoمنيره العازمي
Yes, everyone who isn't a virgin should get checked out & they are responsible for disclosing any relevant facts.
I recall this case from a few years ago, I do believe it should be an offence to have unprotected sex with someone if you know you have a disease you haven't told them about as it's deliberately exposing people to a risk.

What do you refuse to pay for?

Water, what's that all about?
Surely as a taxpaying citizen of a supposedly civilised country I can drink water without which I've already paid for through taxes and the bill to my water company, without having to then to go a shop and buy a bottle of water?
I applaud train stations etc that have drinking fountains, though there aren't nearly enough of them and should be more.

Do you think we should wory about the environment?

Yes, we certainly should.
I recommend everyone read the book Feral by George Monbiot as it's an eye-opener and he challenges many of the assumptions found amongst greens, and makes excellent suggestions about what we should do.
https://www.monbiot.com/2013/05/24/feral-searching-for-enchantment-on-the-frontiers-of-rewilding/
I credit with Monbiot with inspiring me on my Scotland journey, of which this is an account written by one of tyhe leaders of my first trip.

? When wrapping gifts for annual holidays/festivals do you ... ? Reuse old gift wrap? ? Make the wrapping appropriate to the recipient, or use the same wrap for everyone? ? Use alternative wrapping such as newspaper or carrier bags? ? Try to wrap the gift so it looks like something else?

CactusDoug’s Profile PhotoDoug
I often don't wrap gifts but give them on the day, producing them from my manbag. I might buy some Emma Bridgewater wrapping paper (I really like that firm and of course it's in my city) but probably not.
There's an excellent idea here
https://cargocollective.com/wordless/WORDLESS-WRAP
But it's extremely hard to get hold of and is out of stock now. The appeal is obvious; I don't buy specific Christmas cards or wrapping paper, I prefer blank inside with a good picture of an interesting place on the front, so then it's good for any occasion and doesn't promote tacky commercialism of which there's too much already.

What was the first day at your current job/school like?

RidgeBackRogue’s Profile PhotoRidgeBack Rogue
It was good, I'd worked there before and been laid off so it was and wasn't the first day.
I had got the job both through having done good work before, but also I was literally the only person to apply, which helps! ;)
The person who had been doing the job was one of those spoiled young people who come from well-off families, whose parents have made money as spivs but who are themselves useless. So he was fired and a backlog of work had built up.
No one expected me to do all the work on my first day but I gradually went through it, and I knew most people there and enjoyed meeting the ones I didn't know as they were cool.
It was to get much worse as the company is expanding so rapidly, we're unlikely ever to be laid off again as there's so much work, but I'm still there more than 3 years later and will hopefully never be unemployed again.

What has been your favourite experience in life so far?

RidgeBackRogue’s Profile PhotoRidgeBack Rogue
The most worthwhile things are those which involve effort, so I'd say my yearly completion of https://treesforlife.org.uk/volunteer/conservation-weeks/accommodation/athnamulloch-cottage/ is the most fulfilling part of my life.
It's not much fun to do the work but the camaraderie and the scenery make up for the hardship, and the hardship is necessary; the feeling of having done it is much better than the doing it.
Around the house everyone pitches in doing such work as they can, the leaders are leaders and servants, not dictators, and never need to tell people what to do as anyone who sees a job that needs doing will just do it if they can.
I suppose all of life can't be like that (we all chose to be there, and 99% of folk wouldn't) but I hope I've permanently learnt from Athnamulloch in the rest of my life.
Here we are walking home from the hill.

If in a relationship: what’s your favorite thing about your SO? About the relationship? If single: what’s your favorite thing about your best friend?

The feeling of silent understanding, of not needing to make an effort, if having the two of us together and managers at work, noisy neighbours, family etc very much on the outside, only one person can do that for me.

Is poetry dead? Who likes poetry anymore?

I hope it isn't dead or dying as I for one love poetry.
For instance, this year we're commemorating the war dead in the 100th anniversary of World War 1, and it's a poem (written by AE Housman, who wasn't a soldier but had a genius of understanding).
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2016/jul/16/housman-country-heart-of-england-peter-parker-review
Farewell to a name and a number
Recalled again
To darkness and silence and slumber
In blood and pain.
So ceases and turns to the thing
He was born to be
A soldier cheap to the King
And dear to me;
So smothers in blood the burning
And flaming flight
Of valour and truth returning
To dust and night.

What has happened to this society ?

"And, you know, there is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women and there are families. And no governments can do anything except through people, and people must look to themselves first. It is our duty to look after ourselves and then, also, to look after our neighbours"
That's what happened to it.

The weather here is absolutely miserable, what do you like to do on days like these?

RidgeBackRogue’s Profile PhotoRidgeBack Rogue
This morning I'm going for a walk as I always go for a walk in the morning, then working in the day, then tonight I'll be working on my website as I certainly don't want to go out in this weather!
The weather is ok now but the sort of cold rain we got yesterday is my worst kind of weather, much worse than snow.

If you had a daughter, would you consider sending her to the TV show "Toddlers and Tiaras"?

No, certainly not. What would she gain from it? It sounds like a nightmare of pushy parenting & destroying the child's life so their parents can live vicariously through them.
