When people say, "Everything happens for a reason," what do they mean?

They mean well in the first place. It means that something wasn't our decision to make, to accept certain situations because sometimes we believe that some outcomes could have been different if we just took a different path. And tbh sometimes they truly could have had a different outcome if we would have changed an action. People who believe "Everything happens for a reason" for sure don't want to feel responsible. Sometimes a situation can feel so heavy on our shoulders...this is why people say this to each other or sometimes we tell it to ourselves.

Well, you don't. In order to do that you have to agree with everyone and everything. And sometimes certain topics or situations shouldn't be agreed upon. Such as when it comes to hurting people/animals/living beings because you feel obliged to do so. That's not right.
When it comes to me, I'm usually not as confrontative, but when something goes against my own moral compass I don't have a problem arguing with people to make my point clear. Even if I feel drained afterwards I think that saying nothing about it would just not feel right - I refuse to let important conversations slide, even if it's to my own disadvantage (in terms of my own social battery/ energy)

Well everyone deals differently with their emotions.
Where it makes one person soft and sensitive to other peoples feelings, others grow a thicker skin and believe they have to handle everything on their own. So they probably believe standing alone would make them stronger even when in fact it makes them lonelier and problems are as hard to face as for people who seek out for help when they need a helping hand. It's just that they probably downplay those problems in order to face them alone.

Why do we sometimes have to learn things the hard way?

Because we refuse to see things as they are. We have an idea of certain situations or even people and don't like to let go of those. So that's why we need to learn it the hard way.

I prefer talking about issues before cutting ties. Maybe I can help somehow. I distance myself only when I feel that the friendship affects me negatively no matter in which way I try to help or I feel that the person is not going to change their mindset and wants to suffer or even worse, wants to harm other people without feeling responsible for hurting them.

Yes, I do. I like to organize my computer ( files) alphabetically. And I do this with every movie, book, music list...and so on. It's literally an OCD. xD

┊✔┊ – Someone, whom I love today, doesn't make promises unless she knows she can keep her word. And until now I have always seen her sticking to her word. She is the most trustworthy person I've ever known.
