Hello. :) What I think.... I think that I had always known there were still kinds and queens, but I was surprised first, at how many, and second, at what countries - for example Belgium, Norway, Denmark, if I'm not mistaken? It's a lot more common in upscale European countries than I realised.

Speaking of which.... monarchy is considered a less democratic and people-friendly government than a democratic republic. However, all of these countries I mentioned are highly developed and highly social countries. In many of them civil rights, social justice and equality are top priority.

It appears that, if a country is well run and successful, a government that includes inheriting monarchs, and not only those who are chosen by the people, can still be a government that *represents* the people. Similarly, fully democratic republics can have less happy people. It seems to be a manner of listening, caring and working, and not of the exact government type.

So, all in all, I think I'm a little surprised by how many monarchies have survived and how some are still thriving at this day and age. I'm also surprised how some you hear about constantly, while for others the fact they are a monarchy seems unnoticed and forgotten by the international world. How often do you hear talk about the British queen, versus about the Belgian or Danish? It seems.... quaintly human and sadly hypocritical to pass judgment on monarchy, while not looking at its entirety.

My own opinion is that if a certain way of government is existent, surviving and its people do not protest against it and do not want to remove it, then it is a legitimate and perfectly fine option. In fact, it's cute that we can keep a piece of living history and a symbol of our past, while also maintaining the socially-responsible, independent and strong modern type of society.

My perspective wouldn't be that of most Belgians. Being myself Orthodox, a Slav and a russophile (like the majority of my people) certainly is a factor that should be taken into account.

I think that it is a good thing for Russia to secure its sovereignty rather than having to answer to the liberal "international community" and its ideological orthodoxy. Most of the anti-Western rhetoric stands for opposing the wrong turns the West took, like liberalism, progressivism, decadence, secularisation, foreign interventionism, etc. Beyond that, Russia and the West are related by common history to a significant extent, Russians themselves are Europeans, even if their empire extends beyond Europe.

Under different circumstances, Russia could benefit from maintaining a much less anti-Western rhetoric and even consider itself as part of broader Christian/Western civilization. But currently the Western elites stand for imposing post-war liberal democracy to any country it can and making a proxy for its internationalist elites. So Russia really only has the choice between being subordinate and on friendly terms, or sovereign and demonised.

Russia, like China, is giving up on subordinating itself to "international" anything (socialism or liberalism). That, of course, is not a sufficient condition for prosperity, cultural and religious rebirth, and higher birth rates. But it is something, since there is no way to know when, if ever, the West would rid itself of the heritage of 1789 (and even 1517). Being independent has its perks over being dragged into whatever deracinated cosmopolitans decides should be the next tenet of their ideological orthodoxy.

For the Slavic part, I think that Russia seeing itself as the leader of Orthodox Slavdom is a good thing, though obviously impeded by its loss of influence over some ex-Eastern bloc countries. Hence its focus on alliances with mostly non-Slavic countries who are outside of Washington's zone of influence.

FYI, the average Belgian seems to be either for leaving Russia alone but hoping it would become more like the West (even if in moderation), or strongly against Putin's government and in agreement with Atlanticists and interventionists.

Subzistenta mea draga, in momentul in care spui "ratiuni sociale* te transformi intr-un belgian metaforic ce se plimba cu duba intr-un cartier sarac. Ratiunea-i din punct de vedere social, un raport generalizat de normare a integritatii, insa grosul ratiunii sta in intr-o preconceptie generalizata familial asupra interpretarii universale, numita "discernamant". Acum, ratiunea si elementele sociale nu-s chiar cele mai bune prietene daca nu esti cel mai mare fan Kanal D.
(Tu probabil ai o silueta de invidiat, la cat timp petreci scriind in loc sa mananci intr-un...restaurant...sunt sigur ca sansele sa gresesc cu asta sunt ca sansele tale sa ai dreptate in ceea ce spui, nule).

Expertii le mai numesc si basini, dar noi nu suntem experti, le spunem momentan concluzii. D-atunci, orice idioata cu cea mai mica frustrare sociala a dat vina pe barbat si pe societate, din cauza noastra n-aveti voi locuri de munca si drepturi egale. Ce-i drept, da, pe cand voi umblati cu rochiile intrate in fund de la o conventie a drepturilor femeilor la alta, unii din noi erau intr-o bucatarie, avand nevoie d-un salariu ca na, viata e nedreapta. Daca sunteti niste inapte, nu va asteptati la locuri de munca, le vor obtine altele.

You mean acquiring a third language? I think it's good, if you have the time and opportunity to learn it. In some countries where languages are strongly intermixed it can be quite important - and also happen naturally, e.g. Belgian people who have understanding of both French and English, but also some German.

Same with some jobs - if your are working internationally, you would probably need *some* degree of language skill. Especially working for English-speaking company in a branch within a non-English-speaking country. Or moving places - five years in this branch, two years elsewhere in a different country or even continent... Some professions are centred around travel and internationality, and linguistic flexibility would both be necessary for that and likely become a very nice end result - e.g. you learn to travel, but you also travel and end up learning.

In my country of origin, studying a third language (second foreign after English) is considered pretty standard and kinda mandatory. The *level* of knowledge we end up with, however, is usually not very high, unless the student has own investment. That's how I learned some Italian, a lot of which is gone from my memory. Ah, well, I can say individual words or speak in present simple tense...

As for your question, if worked required it, I'd probably try to learn Mandarin. I mean, it's an interesting language, but I expect I wouldn't get too good at it. *Some* skill, but not fluent. I'd prefer to think of it as an opportunity to expand my knowledge - especially since I love languages. In fact, can someone please pay me to study Japanese.... But if there is too much pressure and a ridiculously strict time-scale for learning to speak Mandarin, I might avoid it.

~ Discussed this with some pretty responsible people . . . One guy , an executive council officer , head of food safety , has a small farm with horses ; he & his wife foster lots of kids ; his bio daughter was a close friend of my daughter from when they were 10 . . . .
~ He was really pist-off when he learned SSPCA officer had questioned his neighbour about him , when they were offering home to some dogs ; we were turned down when offering a home to a Belgian Shepherd , yet my kids had walked her several times to get to know her . Also , I've done a lot of work with SSPCA , trapping badger-killers . Just one arrogant dick. That particular rescue centre has since shut down coz they couldn't cope.
