Genuinely curious, why do you dislike Disney? I only ask because growing up I never knew anyone who didn't like it, & I've always viewed their animated films as being all things to people of all ages, so it's a bit of a culture shock that someone doesn't like their films, why is that exactly?
I don’t DISLIKE Disney. The fact that you’re even asking this question speaks to how pervasive Disney marketing is, and how successfully their brand has come to mean “good things” to people.
I’m indifferent to Disney. I love some Pixar films, and some of the original Disney animated films are classics, of course.
And I’m a Star Wars nerd, which means Disney will have my money for the rest of my life!
But the idea of one company having all five of the top grossing movies in a year- and all of them being sequels or reboots- should make anyone who loves film nervous.
Disney is a company, not your friend, and they exist to sell things. Big deal, so does every company, right? BUT- one company having what amounts to a monopoly in the entertainment space is bad for variety, which is bad for new ideas, which is bad for art. And the best art, art that stands the rest of time, is made by passionate individuals with NEW ideas.
So, I think SOME Disney is fine. But ALL DISNEY ALL THE TIME, is not. And I think all of their CGI remakes of (much better) 2D animated features are only succeeding because of nostalgia. What good is a machine that feeds the same things into itself over and over? What new art or ideas can come from that? its a closed loop. See The Lion King because you liked The Lion King and in 20 years we will sell you another Lion King. Etc etc.
And what are we losing by allowing one company to dominate an entire art form? Art that is impoverished of new ideas and concepts is art that doesn’t nourish the soul, it just feeds the gaping maw of boredom. It doesn’t sustain you. That’s what I worry about. Because to me, it matters.
