Do you judge people based on their knowledge of grammar?
Ooof, ok look. If English is not their first language, NO I definitely don’t judge that AT ALL. English is hard.If a relative with a masters degree purposely uses “hillbilly” grammar because they think it’s endearing or something, yeah I have a problem with that.I know teachers who cannot spell 5th grade vocabulary words. That’s a problem. You wrote a book and you want me to buy it? I don’t appreciate the constant errors because you were too lazy or cheap to have it properly proofread and edited.I wrote and edited legal and medical documents for a living. Perfection was a requirement. Do I expect people to be perfect? No. But I do expect them to make an effort if they expect me to invest in what they’re saying.I DO NOT have a problem with people who make an effort, and I especially don’t have a problem with people whose first language is not English. I’m not a monster, and I am inept at plenty of things myself. I simply want people to care and try. If I’m giving them my time and/or money, I don’t think that’s too much to ask.
