What are your views on the belief that the whole human race is one united organism and why? How do you understand this belief?
It reminds me of the Gaia hypothesis, first penned by James Lovelock.
Lovelock's theory proposes that all organisms interact with each other and their inorganic surroundings to create a self-regulating system that maintains the conditions that the planet needs to survive. Survival is the theme of his theory, and it makes sense. He's been recognised by some very impressive names because of this - the Royal Geography Society gave him the thumbs up not too long ago, so it's serious stuff.
However, I don't believe that the human race is quite as sophisticated as the planet. We're a young species - If the Earth's entire history was 24 hours long, then homo sapiens have been around for 1 minute and 17 seconds. We're a blip. And yet, we've still managed to cause no-end of damage. It's almost impressive just how much humans have fucked up.
I believe that if humans were one united organism, we wouldn't continually be turning on ourselves for no reasons whatsoever. In any other species, it's a matter of survival of the fittest. You're going to get eaten if you're small and weedy. You're going to get left behind if you're unhealthy in any respect.
Humans like to play God.
We're the only species that has enslaved it's own kind. The only species that has murdered for no reason. The only species that hunts simply for enjoyment.
No, I don't believe that we're anywhere near sophisticated enough to be one organism at a base level. We are always at war with each other and ourselves.
