What's your opinion on nuclear power? Is it safe? Is it green? Is it better than most of what we're using now? Is it a good idea? Do you know the difference between fission and fusion power production? Do you have different opinions about the two nuclear power sources?

GSCAustin’s Profile PhotoCAustin
Erm...my knowledge of nuclear power is roughly the same as Homer Simpson's.

Are there any companies you won't do business with because of something other than their products and services (i.e. a political boycott)? Are there any companies you go out of your way to patronize, even if their competitors offer better products or deals?

I am a huge fan of Tom's shoes. When you buy a pair, they give a pair to a poor child in a third world country. So, it's called "One for One" movement. And the shoes are so cute, and handmade.

How do you get over guilt after lying to your friends parents for her? :(

CNella’s Profile PhotoChanel
It depends...how big and bad was the lie? If her parents called you and said "Is Emily spending the night with you?" and you lie and say yes, when she's really out with her bf...that's pretty common. As long as Emily wasn't hurt and nothing bad happened, I would just tell her that's the last time you will lie for her.
Your guilt will be fleeting as long as she is okay, and you tell her you will never lie for her again. *hugs*

Have you ever gone to the Deadly Desert? Is it true that if you do, you'll turn to sand?

sadwithmyself’s Profile PhotoSad With Serena With Myself
Yes, it is true if you cross it (by foot) you will turn to sand. However, Ozma of Oz had a great idea when she crossed it using a flying carpet. And of course, Dorothy didn't touch down in her cyclone when she crossed into Oz over the desert...and the Wizard crossed by air too in his hot-air balloon. So it can be crossed, just by air and not by foot.
You're trying to stump me, aren't you. hehe Good luck.

What have you read, watched, or played that's outside of your usual genres? (E.g., watching a horror movie when you don't normally, or reading a romance novel when that's not normally your thing.) What made you decide to give it a try?

GSCAustin’s Profile PhotoCAustin
Well, based on talking with Jesse Pinkman, he is a big fan of "Breaking Bad". So based on his recommendation, I started watching it on Netflix, and I was hooked from the very first show. It was fantastic, and I can't wait for the last 8 episodes to start on August 11. I actually put that on my calendar.

How do you think you would react if you were just going for a walk and minding your own business and accidentally walked into the middle of a feminist rally/protest that turned violent?

2 university students study biology - One from a stable, suburban background whose parents paid his tuition. Graduates with a 3.8 The other from a poor urban or rural environment with no support and worked his way through college. Graduates with a 3.6 Is student with the 3.8 GPA superior?

JessePinkmanGS’s Profile PhotoGrackles Know Your Real Name
I don't think it's a matter of who is superior. It matters more what they do with the rest of their lives, than it does 4 years in college.
So...the student who worked his way through college is dedicated, focused, is a good time manager, and has a work ethic already built in, right? You can't graduate college with a 3.6 working full time without those qualities.
The student with the wealthy parents who paid for his tuition, is more likely at a disadvantage in the beginning of his career. Maybe he's never worked before because he didn't have to. He obviously is intelligent or wouldn't have got the 3.8, but does he have basic people skills? Can he get himself to work on time? Can he take direction from a boss? Can he get along with his co-workers?
These are all things the poor student already knows how to do.
Maybe I'm biased, I was the 3.6, and I saw a lot of the 3.8 students completely clueless in college. Saw one girl try for the first time in her life to do a load of laundry- all jeans, and watched horrified as she dumped a bunch a bleach in there. Another one who's mom called her every morning to wake her up; she didn't know how to use an alarm clock.
Saw students who's parents paid their way cut classes, party like a rock star, take out student loans to pay for a new car...eh, that's a generalization, but I think you know what I mean.
EVERY accomplishment in life means more if we do it ourselves.

Have you ever been to Winkie Country? What's your opinion of that land? Did the death of the Wicked Witch of the West change your view?

sadwithmyself’s Profile PhotoSad With Serena With Myself
Wow, Oz questions. Winkie Country was ruled by the Wicked Witch....and was a tin country. So, it only made sense that the Tin Man took over as ruler after her death.
No, I've never been to Winkie Country. I'm not a big fan of tin. lol

Do you think Affirmative Action to benefit men in higher education would be a justified policy? Also, what would you say the main reasons are why American men are falling behind?

I think Affirmative Action for *anyone* should be banned in higher education. Giving different tuition costs and entrance to people because of their gender, race, or ethnicity, is just plain wrong. With AA, someone is getting shafted by definition. Affirmative Action was designed to be a temporary thing, not forever.
American men falling behind? I'm not sure. I think some of it is due to AA, and the feminization of campuses. There are lots and lots of women's groups at universities, and women are typically "joiners". There just aren't men's groups. If a group called "Empowerment for Men" was formed, can you imagine the response? The men would be jeered...or most likely, keep their distance from it. Protests would form against it. But it's okay to have Empowerment for Women and Empowerment for Minorities.
Many men are going to two year alternative schools, to learn trades. They may be on to something, with the tuition costs rising so quickly and the job market so uncertain for people who have a 4 year degree in liberal arts...it may turn out to be the most sensible thing for right now.
It looks like in the UK (according to this article), white males are now classed as a minority group, so there are some recruitment plans in the works. Interesting article.

Do you have any siblings? Older or younger? How do you get along and how alike or dissimilar are your personalities?

JessePinkmanGS’s Profile PhotoGrackles Know Your Real Name
I have sisters, and I'm in the middle. We are all really different personality wise. I fought a lot with my older sister growing up, mostly over clothes and petty stuff...but now we are all pretty close and I love them all.
I was usually the instigator of trouble growing up. I was very happy being the baby of the family and remember being pretty upset when my little sister was brought home from the hospital. I used to stuff her in my toy oven and turn the "heat" to high when no one was looking. And when she learned to crawl, I would turn a laundry basket upside down over her. She never cried, so she won me over by letting me dress her up in whatever clothes I wanted to. She's still a good sport. :)

Do you have any interesting hobbies?

Cats, yarn, making clothes for my cats, collecting Wizard of Oz stuff, yoga, animal rescue, and listening to my biological clock ticking. :)

Why are so many GSers incompetent when it comes to household tasks? Apparently mowing the lawn and doing laundry are hard now.

Ryou1’s Profile PhotoRyou
Was that Viola Ted's post? I saw that. lol
Household tasks aren't hard. The hard part is, in a relationship, negotiating how to fairly divide up the housework and childcare. With women working full time as well as men, and especially if there are children, each needs to take responsibility for what needs to be done.
You never hear a man say "my wife won't help me with the housework". Or, "my wife won't babysit the kids so I can go golfing". It's implied that it's the woman's responsibility to care for kids and do housework and cooking, and the man "helps".
Now, if the couple negotiate a stay at home parent, then that person's job becomes the housework and the kids. But both men and women working full time? There needs to be an equitable distribution of labor.
"and I picked up his dirty socks for yearsssssssss while he laid on the couch" <---will not name GSer, but there you go. A divorce due to (at least partially) resentment that a full time working wife has to do it all at home too.

Why do so many anti-feminists and/or Men's Rights Activists use shaming language when referring to male feminists, e.g., mangina and white knight? Why do they think this is appropriate? Why would they do this when they have no problem with anti-feminist/MRA women like that woman, GirlWritesWhat?

ThomasGWS’s Profile PhotoThomas
I remember how shocked I was when I first looked at www.avoiceformen.com. Paul Elam and his faithful followers bandy those words about, as well as calling women horrible names. Someone said AVFM is now considered a hate group and I believe it. He's even attacked women who say they are traditional, casually calling them "cvnts" and worse.
If AVFM was the first recognized "organization" for MRAs, then Paul Elam set the tone as the hate shaming king. And many men, when burned badly in relationships, forced to become visitors instead of parents to their children, are paying alimony when their ex's could work, do become jaded, cynical, bitter, hostile, and hateful. Add to that, the anonymity of the internet, and what you have is a website (not a movement) filled with hate towards women in general, and hate towards any man who shows an appreciation for women or empathy for women's issues. Hence the shaming language.

When anti-feminists/Men's Rights Activists claim that 3rd wave feminism is the main reason for the alleged "collapse of society", do you think it's possible that they only feel this way because they don't like change and everything will be just fine? Why is 3rd wave their only scapegoat?

ThomasGWS’s Profile PhotoThomas
No one likes change that comes at their expense. I think that's what the MRAs are most upset about. With AA and lowered physical standards for traditionally male jobs such as firefighters, some women are leap-frogging over more qualified men for jobs and education.
I'm no expert on the waves of Feminism, but from what I've read and what I've seen, Third wave promotes women over men just to even up the numbers. What a ridiculous concept. If women aren't interested in engineering, so what? Let the people, regardless of gender, get scholarships to study what they are truly interested in and good at, at universities.
That being said, I can't help but wish more men were in education. With the epidemic of fatherlessness in our society, kids could really benefit from strong male role models, from Kindergarten up. So I will contradict myself here by saying if there were scholarships for men which encouraged them to get a degree in elementary education, for example, it would benefit our society as a whole.
So, going back to my first statement, why would someone embrace change that is to their detriment, could cost them promotions at work, cost them jobs, and could cost them a place at universities for less qualified women?
I'm a classic fence sitter on gender issues, I like to think I am open minded enough to see both sides and try to understand each. So..."why is 3rd Wave their only scapegoat?" Because it comes at their expense.

Well, I have 11 unanswered questions, but they're all too pervy or nonsensical to answer. So keep 'em coming, and I'll pick through.

Can I borrow your Duracell Batteries?
