Did you know that aborted babies are being used in food manufacturing? :( http://www.naturalnews.com/049367_aborted_babies_flavor_chemicals_food_corporations.html

SophiePinkie’s Profile PhotoSophie Pink
Yikes, Sophie. I did not look into this much at all but I would be very cautious about internet articles on a topic like this. An organization like http://www.lifenews.com/ is a source I trust as regards to the horrors of abortion. Perhaps you would find it interesting if you do not know of it already. God bless you!

I'm confused about what to study at the University. Can you advise me something?

It is a very difficult question to answer as much will depend on your circumstances, for example is it important that you start to earn money soon or can you spend more time on your studies Also it is important to know what you would like to achieve through your studies, for example, is it primarily to earn money? or are you more concerned about helping people and making a difference in the world? Your interests and your abilities should also be considered when deciding on what to study.
It might be a good idea to think of as many of these type of questions as you can and to try to answer them.
In general though I can advise you not to be too anxious about getting your degree as quickly as possible. It is good to take time to look around a bit and if you are uncertain about what to study it might be a good idea to spend a year or two experiencing more of life. It is difficult to find work of course but perhaps you could volunteer to do charitable work, perhaps even in a foreign country.
As to what to study you might think about at first studying courses which develop your ability to think and your knowledge of the world for example philosophy, history, English and a another language. These courses help one to develop critical thinking and develop you as a person. This will help you in every aspect of life. After this you could specialize in a field which is more focused on leaning skills which will help you to make money.
I hope this is of some help. If you like, you could give me your name here on ask.fm and I could try to ask you questions to explore what might be good for you to study. I am no expert but I can try to help. I will also pray that God guide you. God bless and I hope to hear from you again.

You weren't disturbing me and I had understood that you were trying to change my mind. In my religion abortion is a really big sin as well. My God said to don't kill anyone even a spider! But you know a thing? I like my religion but I can't stand all the rules and I'm still not against the abortion.

I hope not so much as to change your mind but as to help you to think about the issue more.

Were you asking about abortion and stuff?

Yes. I noticed in your answer to, "What is a feminist?" you quoted from a source which seemed to link the right to abortion very strongly with the feminist cause. I am Christian and believe that abortion is a great evil. Of course the suppression of women is a great evil too. But I think that feminists are wrong in wrong in thinking that the promotion of abortion will strengthen the feminist cause, it will certainly only harm it. I tried to ask you questions about abortion hoping to get you thinking more about it. I did not want to make you feel uncomfortable, but I noticed that you were feeling a little uncomfortable and I am sorry about that, but, it is an important issue. From what you answered you don't really seem to support abortion fully and so it seems to me that you do not agree totally with the view of a feminist which you quoted.

How do you maintain your personal image on social media and why?

I find the question a little contorted.
Does one need to maintain a personal image on social media? What does it mean to maintain a personal image?
I can understand the question as how do you maintain or protect your good reputation on social media? Or perhaps better how does one maintain or protect one's good reputation on social media?
The next part of the question as to why one should do that seems obvious as it really part of loving oneself and we should love ourselves as we would like to be loved by other people.
But as to answering these questions, I feel I am really not qualified and I have set a bad example.
Speaking kindly of myself I might say that I have tried to sort out flaws in my character by exposing them on social media. Speaking less kindly of myself you might say I have been seeking attention or striking out at people.
I have tried to present a real picture of myself hoping that it may draw others to Christ but now think it would have been better to present more of Christ and less of myself.

Do you read books over and over, or once done do you never go back? BQ: If you're a "re-reader", what book have you read most often?

There is only really one book that I have read again and that is "Brideshead Revisited" by Evelyn Waugh. I have occasionally dipped into "Lord of the Rings" again.
There is also a very good miniseries of "Brideshead Revisited" with Jeremy Irons and I have watched that at least twice.
Need to read a bit more I think.

I noticed you commented on becoming Catholic-- so what was your religious affiliation as you grew up, and what made you choose Catholicism?

I was Protestant. First Methodist and then at university I joined another Protestant group, The International Movements of the Churches of Christ.
I became Catholic because I believe it is the Church which Christ founded - it can trace its history right back to the apostles and Christ! The Catholic Church is the only group which I have found which can answer the question, "How do you know that your interpretation of the Bible is right?" logically.
It is a truly amazing faith. Christ waits for us truly physically present in every Catholic Church!

How is your weekend going Stephen?

Sorry that I did not answer this question earlier. As i recall I had a good weekend. It was the last weekend of a visit from my sister and brother-in-law from Australia.

I don't believe that sin kills our spiritual life… I think it's more a case of sin prevents us evolving spiritually. Do you find that some people on earth are more spiritually evolved than others?

SophiePinkie’s Profile PhotoSophie Pink
It is interesting that you do not think that sin kills our spiritual life. I will try to ask you some questions about sin and the spiritual life.
As to some people being more "spiritually evolved" than others I certainly think people vary a great deal in their spiritual maturity. The opportunity for spiritual growth seems incredibly vast. An example which always astounds me is that of the Virgin Mary. It is said of her that if you were to take all the spiritual merits gained by all the saints, we might call that all the spiritual development of everyone and to compare it to her spiritual advancement hers would overshadow the sum total of everyone who has ever lived; outside of course of Christ who as God and man is on a totally different level.

have you ever been to bible study?

Yes, I have attended groups where the Bible is studied but sadly not so much since becoming Catholic. I really have not grown much in my understanding of the Scriptures for quite some time now.

"God in his goodness judges us according to our conscience. " Does that mean sociopaths (who are said to not have a conscience) will not be judged by God as having sinned?

SophiePinkie’s Profile PhotoSophie Pink
If a person has not gone against his conscience then he has not sinned. We also have a duty to inform our consciences as to what is right and not doing this is sin. That said if a sociopath does not have a conscience and is not able to inform his conscience then he will not have sinned.
Does this mean that he would be a perfect person, without sin, a saint? Well he would still have original sin which is common to all people as descendants of Adam and is a result of his sin.
But he would still have never have committed a personal sin and so would be of great standing with God? To be close to God is not only a matter of not sinning but of taking a step to God, of having faith.
You might ask, but the sociopath is not able to do this and so how can God punish him for what he cannot do?
God does not punish him. It has been speculated that babies who die before the age of reason and so have no personal sin but who have not been baptized will not go to heaven but to a place of natural bliss. The case of our sociopath seems similar. I have heard that the idea that babies go to limbo which I have described is contested within the Catholic Church.
I hope this is of some interest. Please test my thinking with more questions. Thanks Sophie. :-)

Are you a vegetarian?

No. When cooking for myself recently I found that I ate little red meat as I was trying to economize but frozen chicken proved to be a cheap source of protein in my attempt to eat well.

"The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague." Do you agree? Why?

I don't think that the boundaries of Life and Death are vague.
In the physical realm life and death are very separate and in the spiritual realm they are also very distinct. What do I mean by spiritual death - sin. Sin kills our spiritual life. While many people will argue what is sin this does not make for a shadowy distinction for God in his goodness judges us according to our conscience. In order to sin seriously we must fail to follow our conscience in a serious matter. This means that unlike the law which we can transgress and be punished for that transgression even though we did not think we were transgressing a law, with sin we are only punished for the wrong doing we know of.
Thanks be to God that he has given us a very clear way in order to have our sins forgiven and that is to find a priest ordain by Jesus to continue his ministry here on earth.
In closing I might say that while life and death are very distinct we would be wrong to think that there is not life after death.
Thanks for the question. :-)

How can one achieve a complete absence of ego, in your opinion?

Yikes, I do not know.
St. Benedict has a number of steps which mark off one's progress towards humility which is the same to me as the complete absence of ego.
I certainly think the start of humility is to recognize the existence of God and his absolute greatness and our absolute nothingness.
Something which helps me to try to strive for humility is the Scripture which says:
"If anyone supposes he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know." (1 Corinthians 8:2)
I hope this is of some help. God bless you!

Are you saying that if you had a partner that was unfaithful, it would not mean the end of the relationship as you would think she is accountable to God not you?

SophiePinkie’s Profile PhotoSophie Pink
Thanks for clarifying my answer. The relationship I was thinking of was marriage. Infidelity in a marriage does not break the marriage bond. As hurtful as infidelity may be to the other spouse it is a far more serious injury to God.
The injured spouse might decide to live separately from the unfaithful spouse but it must be understood that the marriage remains. I would think this a great incentive for the injured spouse to try to help the unfaithful spouse to honor the marriage so that married life can continue and also (and more importantly) to help the unfaithful spouse to heal the injury he or she has committed against God.
In principle God is first in marriage as he is first in unmarried life.

Was Noah (of the Bible) a vegetarian?

SophiePinkie’s Profile PhotoSophie Pink
I have never thought about whether he was a vegetarian or not. It is possible that on the arc he ate only vegetables but he might have eaten meat as well. It is quite natural for us to eat meat. I don't think the animals would have "rebelled" against him if he ate them.
Quite a fun question.
As you can see I do believe that there was a literal arc. I don't think you have to believe this to be a Christian.

IYO, when one is in a monogamous partnership with another is flirtatiousness cheating?

Yes, I would think flirtatiousness is cheating if one is in a monogamous partnership. One should be careful not to judge your partner too quickly though, sometimes men and women can react to each other quite unconsciously or at least not consciously and deliberately.
Marriage is really the true monogamous partnership and it rises above infidelity of one's partner while not condoning it. The spouses are both accountable to God first.
Thanks for the question. :-)

What is it you most dislike?

That I often drive the divine life that God has given me from my soul and this often because I feel inadequate. Truly crazy that I should offend God who loves me because I do not love myself as I should.
