This is not a question for gen z. This is a question for my fellow millennials, what was your MySpace's main page song that'd autoplay when someone accessed your page?

I’m not millennial I’m gen X, however I did have myspace pages. If I remember rightly one page used my own song Cactus Night, and another used a 1980s Doctor Who theme tune.

Imagine me living in the 1980s and playing in a Glam band. With poofy hair! Lexy Sixx. 🤣 Gods of Asgard, as if Black Metal and corpse paint aren't horrid enough. 🤣 :::visits Fantoft Stave in spandex, girlie makeup and tacky colors::: "Wow, this place is hotter 🔥 than me..." 🤣🤣🤣 💗

She liked so many 😅 too many to mention. Bands like Duran Duran, spandau ballet spring to mind but there’s so many more but I’m not going to ask her and get her started on them 😅

Are there any films, shows, books or games you think are underrated and don't get the credit they deserve?

🐉 The Dragonriders of Pern series of novels by Anne McCaffrey mostly written between the 1960s - 1980s and continuing into the 2000s written by her son.
🎥 They were big in their day, but a revival (e.g. a proper film) would be cool.
📚 I’ve just bought my niece a boxed set of one of the trilogies for Yule.

What kinds of music do you like? Any favorite songs, artists, bands etc?

mostly alternative rock, classic rock, and nu-metal. lately i've been listening to a lot of 1970s and 1980s rock, but some of my favorite bands are linkin park, korn, and stone temple pilots. i also like watsky, NF, ashnikko, two feet, grandson, ghost, deftones, etc.

Have you ever pulled a prank on someone/had a prank pulled on you that went horribly wrong? What happened? How did you deal with it? 😅🥴

anonamouse89887’s Profile Photoanonamouse
✍️ I’m not going to tell you the worst one as it backfired to the degree I never did any prank ever after (nobody was harmed, I didn’t do anything physically dangerous, I just didn’t factor in potential consequences).
However another one was in an office I worked in in the 1980s when I was very young.
✍️ The account I was working on was a couple of million in credit and we owed them the money. I got the secretary to write a fake letter, advising the company that as a gesture of goodwill we had enclosed a cassette tape entitled “30 autumn time greats featuring Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen” and we hoped they’d accept this in lieu of the small debt.
✍️ It went to the manager’s desk for signature and he wasn’t happy when he saw it, obviously his point being that it could just have been quickly signed by someone without reading it and posted out causing mayhem.
So anyway, my bad.
I hate pranks and pranking these days. I don’t know what I saw in it in my youth.

What is your favourite "that definitely happened" story that someone has told you? (a story that is almost 100% guaranteed to be untrue or grossly misrepresented)

DovahMonah’s Profile PhotoDovahMonah
🕺🏻 In the late 1980s and very early 1990s a pre-internet viral rumour went round my local nightclubs about organ legging operations.
🍹 A friend would approach you (as they did me) and let you know quietly that there were attractive people going round offering to buy clubgoers a drink.
🔪 However these were spiked, and the clubber would the following morning wake up in an alley and find themselves in a medical mess and without a kidney or whatever, with no memory of the previous night.
👮 The friend would tell you that the police were close to catching the criminals, so not to say anything publicly that might tip them off, just not to accept drinks from a stranger, however sexy.
💊 Although it was untrue (at least in the UK) it’s interesting to me how this fake scare actually preceded a future era of the very real threat of rohypnol and date r*ape.

Would being forced to regress to a 1980s or 1990s level of technology and internet access be an entirely bad thing?

Not entirely but it would slow or stop the improvement in discrimination regression, I think the more a level playing field is broadcast the better for equal rights

What's your opinion on drinking culture around university students?

Shannon678900’s Profile PhotoShannon
🎓 I actually gave a presentation on this to senior staff at NEU in Boston MA.
🍺 Campuses in the USA are (or at least were at that time) all dry, whereas in the UK drinking is/was (I’m long out of touch with the HE scene now) in many ways seen as a fundamental part of student culture.
🥃 However such ‘culture’ tended to exclude all sorts of groups of students whose culture didn’t revolve around bars and drinking.
🤹‍♀️ At some point, I think in the 1980s, Students Unions were forced by the Ministry for Education to provide more than just somewhere to get cheap alcohol, and from that came a whole swathe of student programmes, activities, education research and welfare support.
💰 Still the reputation held but by the early noughties Students Unions’ bars were losing business hand over fist to local bars clubs and pubcos who had almost completely cornered the student market, and they were still heavily promoting to students when I left the scene.
❓ I don’t know what happened next, how alcohol awareness among universities has affected policy etc, I’m pretty much out of the loop.

What was the last thing that shocked you?😱

Yesterday i was scrolling down on Insta i just saw a post and it was really shocking and funny too.
In 1980s, there was a man called Robert Crandall, who was then head of American Airlines. He removed just one Olive from every single Salad served to their Customers.
Nobody noticed and they saved $40,000 a year. Wooooow!! 😁

Do you wear sunscreen?

Yes! It's wise to use sun protection. I adhere to the slip, slop, and slap principle. Slip refers to putting on a shirt or other protective garment. Slap simply means to slap on a hat, while slop means to slop on some sunscreen. I believe that was a popular campaign in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s or 1990s.

Why is it that in the 1980s, pop vocalists sang like their lives depended on it, but today's "artists" sound like they sound like they're reading a shopping list back to themselves?

c_ong’s Profile PhotoDandelion_Monster
I agree. I cannot understand today's music, anything released after 2014 I haven't ever heard/refuse to listen to it.

Most annoying song of all time?

It was one I saw on Top of the Pops in the late 1980s featuring a bunch of hunky men doing a version of the floor dance that used to be done in discos to “The Rowing Boat Song” on the studio floor with lyrics that went something like “row - ee - oh, rooooow”.
No idea what it was called or who sang it, they thankfully vanished into immediate obscurity.

What was your high school like?

It was a 1980s suburban past-its-best Comprehensive.
We were lucky in some regards, it had plenty of green grounds, a bit of woodland, a swimming pool, sports centre, chicken coop, potting sheds and stuff.
But they were kind of vestiges of an earlier time when the school had been quite highly regarded, and by the time I was there the pool was often not in use, the teaching was average, the sports centre ended up getting firebombed, and so on.
Also, way too much hymn singing in assembly.

Which is your favourite decade and why?

AdrianaRafaela98’s Profile PhotoAdriianna Rafaella
Obviously it will be the first 10 years of my life. I had nothing to worry..! I was like a chilled cup of icecream that everyone loved me like anything. No negative traits. No beauty conscious.. No health conscious.. No heart break especially.. No studies.. No tension.. Never had future plans.. So, I lived that moment.
I had the following things which I cherish even now..! Everyone might sound similar with my points I guess.
I had Mom all the time by my side. I was always in her warmth. It made me feel like am inside a nutshell keenly protected by an angel who is a Godsent who will freak out when she hears my wail and weep.
I don't need to worry about looking perfect, presentable costume, neatly combed hair, well behaved nature. All these imperfections made people love me.
I can do anything I want at the very moment.. I can smile, cry, puke, shout, yell, roar, make grumpy voice, yawn, piss ,piddle. Everything was warmly welcomed by people around.!
SO, I lived that exact milli second of my life without giving a damn about the next second..! That's why I feel those 10 years would be the best decade of my life..!
The consecutive years after the first decade of my life was literally hell. Even if I smile, it would sound like a calamity to others.
The 2000s:
The time between 2000–2010 was the decade that comprised most of my schooling and memories growing up.
This was before the inevitable pressures and challenges of adult life, e.g. a series of jobs, higher education, dating, and just dealing with the “real world” in general.
Also I would say it’s a tossup between the 1960’s and 1980’s. The sixties and the eighties had the best music and TV shows. I enjoy them with my mom.

I thing the 50's rock and roll era would be fun. The music was exciting and new....and wasn't that the time when Elvis Presley made his first appearance ?

How is a person's musical taste formed?

I can only speak from my own experience. My father listened to a great deal of Rock / Classic Rock - my mother liked some of it too, but she had a preference for Classical and Opera. I was exposed to just about everything from Motorhead to Mozart at a very young age. An older cousin was heavily into more extreme styles of Metal, Hardcore, Shoegaze, etc. and an a55load of electronic and "experimental" music from the 1980s and 1990s - everything from Goth and Punk, to New Wave and post-Punk, to Techno and Hip Hop. Through him, his band and their friends, I became aware of more artists and I realized that I was drawn more toward guitar-driven genres / sub-genres than the others. Around the time when I was learning how to play guitar, Classical became my favorite but I played mostly Thrash Metal and within a few years, I slowly transitioned to Black Metal. I suppose one's musical tastes are formed and influenced by older or more experienced ears - at least, that was my progression.

Lex any newer band that plays in the old Hard Rock or Metal style impresed you?

Yeah, I can think of a few - if you're looking for something in the Hard Rock and / or Traditional Heavy Metal genre, "Bullet" from Sweden sounds exactly like a 1980s band. Think AC/DC meets WASP with occasional hints of KISS. I believe they started back in the early 2000s but you wouldn't know it from their music. ;-)

💙❤💚🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿💙❤💚Nagorno-Karabakh, one of the ancient residential and cultural centers of Azerbaijan, is part of Karabakh in general. During the Soviet era, in 1923, the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region was established in the mountainous part of Karabakh. In fact, at the root of the problem is the claim of armenians, who have been resettled in Karabakh since the 18th century, to take possession of Azerbaijani lands.
The armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict began in 1988 with the armenians' open territorial claims to the historical lands of Azerbaijan and ethnic provocations. armenians represented in the Soviet Union, the leadership of the armenian SSR, and the armenian Diaspora abroad began to take action in the early 1980s to use the weakening of the USSR's central government to annex the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region to armenia.
In 1987-89, more than 250,000 Azerbaijanis were forcibly expelled from their historical lands, 216 of them were brutally killed and 1,154 were injured.

🎲 Inspired by the following “Would you rather” poll question: https://ask.fm/campfire_games/photopolls/161829060 — What are the advantages and disadvantages of living a life by making a every decision in life by rolling dice?

zy_cv’s Profile PhotoManu
🎲 Well, it’s often the case in Dungeons & Dragons 😁
🎲 In the 1980s I wrote a story in which an evil character would use the roll of the die to decide the fate of his captives.
🎲 Later a similar character appeared in the book ‘The Algebraist’ by Iain Banks.
🎲 So I think it’s the route for chaos-lovers!

80s were the best in my opinion. Music from that time used to be made with passion and love. Lyrics with reflexive words.

The 80's largely passed me by ; I was to busy conquering everything , in business / career ; saw it as a punk rebound
~ but there were a few got through to me
“I Just Died In Your Arms” is a rock song performed by the 1980s English rock band Cutting Crew. The lyrics of the song are inspired by a real romantic affair that Nick Van Eede (lead singer of Cutting Crew) had. According to Eede, he wrote the song about a “gypsy” girlfriend of his whom he had been separated from for about a year and was “pining away” until he eventually met her on a New Year’s Eve. The meeting led to a brief affair that apparently lasted only a night. Eede said the legendary line “I just died in your arms tonight” came to him while he was in bed with her that night. According to Eede, the next morning he wrote down the line. The brief affair eventually led to the pair having a daughter named Lauren, who was born on 13 May 1986.

I had this question in mind for a while. Should Life Sentence Prisoners (Murderers/Molesters/Etc.) Be Used For Biological Testing of New Drugs instead of testing on animals ? I would like to hear your thoughts

Well, that's a pretty devastating question "D
..
At first sight, we go emotional a lot. Either: of course - they are monsters, they deserve it, they have no human value anymore, and they should be used for the sake of other good humans - they should be! Or: Noway! - this is inhumane, they are still human beings, after all, we can't become other monsters for the sake of science - they shouldn't be!
But emotional attitudes aren't so reliable, for one can change his attitude once the community culture has been switched or the outcome benefit has been established.
..
When the Tuskegee experiment's secrets exposed in 1972- where black men were enrolled in a research project designed to gather data on the natural history of syphilis, funded by the U.S. Public Health Service in the 1930s, participants were lied to and believed that they were getting some sort of access to medical care, and even when the treatments were developed it was not offered to their cohort, and more of that, a nurse was commissioned to follow those who translocate ensuring that they did not get access to medical care at another location.! - the public opinion were horrified calling for should be and shouldn't be. But then what?
..
In the early 1980s when AIDS was recognized and the search for treatments started, a large number of prisoners had HIV because of needle sharing, then the only available treatment for them was provided under the label of clinical research. In 1997, Hornblum described the history of prisoners as research subjects in 20th-century America, stating that "From the early years of this century, the use of prison inmates as raw material for medical experiments became an increasingly valuable component of American scientific research" At Holmesburg Prison alone from 1962 to 1966, a total of 33 pharmaceutical companies tested 153 experimental drugs. (Hornblum, 1998) (Gostin et. al 2007).
..
So the idea is: communities are more pragmatic when it comes to what should and what shouldn't. I used to say that research ethics are not ethics, they are just some bunch of principles and laws. Scientists can tell us how it's so amazing to manipulate stem cells, yet they can't tell us how it's so right or so wrong! But we keep asking the same right question to the same wrong persons and then the answer we got: if it's beneficial, then it's good.
..
We actually perform the action, then we start to ask whether it's right or wrong. But once it appears useful/beneficial/productive, we then keep doing it/legitimizing it/modifying the law for it and changing cultures for it. The irony is; we keep saying there were consent and agreement, the same time we say they are mentally and psychologically disordered people! Not to mention those who aren't educated, those who are in desperate need for medical care, and those who are in isolation.
= The rest of the answer is here, as usual :"

qotd: what are some of your favourite songs/musicians from last century? what is your favourite decade for music?

I don’t have a favourite decade for music. Here’s a few examples of music I like from various decades though.
🎵Mostly C19th & C20th🎵
👉🏼 Classical (particularly Lalo, Sibelius, Lutoslowsky, Bartok, Greig, Holst, Havergal Brian)
🎵The 1920s & 1930s🎵
👉🏼 Big band, dancehall, popular jazz stuff
🎵 The 1940s 🎵
What happened here? A dearth of innovation. Almost like there was a war on, or summat. It all basically sounds like the theme tune to Coronation Street.
🎵 The 1960s 🎵
👉🏼 Northern Soul music (black American soul, bossanova, blues, jazz, some Tamla Motown, squiggly-dee hammond organ, etc etc)
👉🏼 60s Underground & Psychedelia (incl second-formation Moody Blues)
👉🏼 60s white R&B (The Yardbirds, the Small Faces, The Who, The Kinks, The Action, The Creation, etc etc)
👉🏼 Rock/guitar based (notably Hendrix)
👉🏼 some 60s pop & chart music (including pre-rock Quo)
🎵 The 1970s 🎵
👉🏼 Progressive Rock, Alt Rock, Folk Rock (which might incl Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, The Moody Blues etc)
👉🏼 Some Americana
👉🏼 Some electronica (eg Tangerine Dream)
👉🏼 some 70s pop & chart music
🎵 The 1980s 🎵
👉🏼 Some ‘79/mod/punk/new wave (eg The Jam, Secret Affair etc)
👉🏼 Ska & 2-Tone (eg The Beat, The Selecter etc)
👉🏼 Some heavy pop/light rock (eg Big Country, Duran Duran etc)
👉🏼 Some rock which at the time was known as “heavy metal” (Motorhead, Iron Maiden etc)
👉🏼 Ambient, Alt & Electronica (Tangerine Dream, Spacemen 3 etc)
🎵The 1990s🎵
👉🏼 Indie (Charlatans, Kula Shaker, Nirvana, etc)
👉🏼 Nu-folk, Alt-folk
+ all the previous stuff mentioned that’s still around

After the felons voting; In Ireland, if you don't pay your tv license&get caught, you're given a permanent criminal record after. This leads to you possibly not being able to leave the country, possibly not being able to foster/adopt, possible problems with voting etc. What's your opinion on this?

urlsareshittbh’s Profile Photourlsareshittbh
👉🏼 I’m not sure what the long-term implications are over here for tv license non-payment, though I think there’s a fine for non-payment.
👉🏼 Fining people who have struggled to pay their previous bills or debts has always seemed counter-productive to me, I think issuing people with a financial advisor to help them budget and get back on track would be best for everyone, including the overstretched justice systems, but hey I’m just a guy with a crazy dream etc ..
👉🏼 (Deliberate fraud of course would be a separate issue).
👉🏼 Here we have the concept of spent” sentences which came in around the 1980s or 1990s I think. So if you have a criminal record it lasts for so many years after your conviction and then is considered “spent” (except in some very serious categories I think). Spent sentences still have to be declared if they’re applying for certain jobs though, eg working with children.
👉🏼 Non-payment of a tv license meaning a permanent record that can never be “spent” resulting in having your passport removed, preventing you from adopting or not being allowed to vote does seem really extreme to me.
