As for the UK, (mind I haven't gone in a while and when I did I was under the voting age) I think they're fair. Aside from the Germans, the Brits consider rules something sacred. If elections are tainted in anyway, consider me surprised. Again, I don't know how it is exactly in the UK right now, these are mere observations.

to what extent do you shape your own destiny, and how much is down to fate?

I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. I also think, that our decisions and acts and their consequences are a result of fate. I don't know how to eloquently put this, but we have the power to create our own destinies and fate is an unknown entity that lurks in the corner, watching, that throws a coincidence or curve ball in our path that distrupt our plan so we go "damn, it's fate."
Made 0 sense but the question is beyond me. Love it though.
