Are you planning to unretire from democracy to vote for Trump?

I'd consider violating my principles and voting if I lived in a swing state. As it is, I live in California, so there's no point in voting because we all know which way this state will go electorally.

Benjamin Franklin said "having a very ardent desire to see and observe the state of America a hundred years hence, I should prefer to an ordinary death, being immersed with a few friends in a cask of Madeira, until that time". How do you think he would react to modern America?

If he had any decency, he'd quietly hang himself out of shame for what his and his co-conspirators' half-cocked ideas condemned his posterity to.

From a purely economic standpoint, how many immigrants per year truly benefits the US? I would say no more than 30k-35k.

A relative handful. As many as we had between 1924 and 1964, I'd say. Spouses of Americans who married overseas, a few truly brilliant professors or engineers, talented artists or performers, and wealthy businessmen or investors, and that's it.
This is especially true as robots get better and better and start to replace more and more jobs done by humans. Some people say that before very long at all, the labor of only 20% of adults will be necessary. This presents difficulties for both sides of the political aisle. For the right, the question is: if the rise of robots end up with 80% of the adult population being unemployed (and understanding that you cannot simply let 80% of the people in your country starve in the street), how do we *not* end up turning to some form of socialism? For the left, the question is: at 80% unemployment, what possible sense could it make to bring in any more immigrants when, no matter how willing to work they may be, there will simply be no jobs for them to take?
Then again, actually working is not really what the left is packing the country full of penniless Third World immigrants for, is it?

Got anything to plug this week?

antidem’s Profile PhotoAntiDem
As a matter of fact, yes. My new YouTube video is up, in which I interview old friend of the blog Psycho Dish. He talks about his past and future, and about how the son of a long line of liberals, social crusaders, and even outright communists ended up moving to the right. He tells us about his family history, his experiences with poverty and homelessness, his time working for a communally-run taxi service in Berkeley, and his experiences traveling in Asia

What were you doing browsing /cuteboys/, "8chan's biggest gay board" in your own words? Ready to come out of the closet yet?

Wherever rare, dank Trump memes are being produced, thither will I go.

How is calling the Pope an asshole in public supposed to support hierarchy and authority?

If your only priority is supporting hierarchy and authority, move to North Korea and spend your days working tirelessly to support the Dear Leader. You will find nothing anywhere that will fit your priorities more exactly.
If, however, you think that a Restoration will be more complicated than simply insisting on blind obedience to whichever authority figure demands it, well...

I fail to see why anyone would unironically call himself a "traditionalist". What does that even mean, apart from LARPing Skyrim? Which traditions are being referenced? Homosexuality and infanticide?

Ah, the Talmudic argument style. Makes me hungry for a bagel mit a schmear.

Got anything to plug during your long road trip?

antidem’s Profile PhotoAntiDem
Sure do! My latest edition of On The Road With AntiDem is live on YouTube! In it, I discuss why Las Vegas is the ultimate libertarian town - which I mean in every possible good way, and also in every possible bad way. I also introduce my new theory of rights, which is a topic I'll be returning to on my blog in days to come.

What are some good books that criticize the failures of historical materialism, socialism, and communism?

Start with Pat Buchanan and E. Michael Jones.

Did you wrap up the roadtrip? Any interesting happenings?

Still on the road. I'm currently at Niagara Falls after having gone to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown for the Griffey/Piazza induction. So far my route has been, approximately, San Francisco -> Las Vegas -> Albuquerque -> Dallas -> New Orleans -> Tampa -> South of the Border -> Richmond -> Albany -> Cooperstown -> Niagara Falls. The tentative plan for the rest of the trip is Niagara Falls -> Toronto -> Chicago -> Mt. Rushmore -> Little Bighorn Battlefield -> Salt Lake City -> Wendover -> Reno -> San Francisco. I should be done in about ten more days.
I've managed meetups with @garrettlgray @CheshireOcelot and Psycho Dish, all of which were enjoyable and enlightening.

Could you recommend a good history book about the twentieth century?

What do you mean by this? Do you mean a good book that covers the entire history of the entire twentieth century, or so you mean a good book that covers some aspect of twentieth century history?

Do you think Christianity's concept of personal salvation somehow inspired the modernist idea of individualism—especially in the context of leftist ideologies?

Maybe in the same sense in which the White Album inspired Charles Manson to axe-murder Sharon Tate. Cranks and crazies look at things and see what they want to see in them instead of what's actually there. Rousseau, Voltaire, Jefferson, Franklin, Robespierre, Marx, Lenin, Rawls, Alinsky - all of them were cranks whose complete and utter misreadings of history, philosophy, and religion led to incalculable disaster. But Christianity is about as guilty of their crimes as Paul McCartney is for the actions of the Manson Family.

http://ask.fm/antidem/answers/139383293377 - Inelegant verbiage in this question. Here's a better one: "There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen" - V. I. Lenin. He was a red, but he was probably 4SDs smarter than the Alt-Right monkeys on here.

Yes, we all know that history has some slow innings and some barn burners. Quit acting like this blindingly obvious observation makes you the next Aristotle.

In a previous answer, you said "there are critical differences between Prussian-style national socialism and Fabian-style international socialism." Could you explain them briefly, or point to a source that discusses them?

GAlighieri3’s Profile PhotoHenry Gloucester
I'm not exactly an expert on them, but as I understand it, the basic idea is that Prussian socialism is, first, nationalist as opposed to internationalist - based on a common bond of blood, faith, and soil instead of being world-savers in the Fabian/Marxist model - and is much closer to the Greek idea of "you own the state, and the state owns you"; i.e. a two-way obligation instead of the one-way obligation of Fabian socialism and Marxism. So for example, the modern welfare state invites dirt-poor immigrants into a country with the specific intention of putting them on welfare. It also demands nothing of the people who use welfare other than showing up every year or two to vote it back into power (and even that is only expected, not legally required). Neither of those things would happen under Prussian socialism.
But really, you should research this one yourself instead of relying on my limited knowledge of the topic.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how badly did Rafael Cruz just fuck up?

Here's a Scott Adams style theory on Cruz last night:
This is actually a masterstroke for Trump's credibility. Trump's two most catchy memes have been "Lyin' Ted" and "Crooked Hillary". So now Trump allows Cruz to publicly violate his pledge to support the Republican nominee live on national television. This proves beyond any doubt that Trump was 100% right about Cruz all along.
Now, when the voters think of the "Crooked Hillary" meme, they'll know that Trump has already been proven right about his other most famous meme, which will actually lend *more credibility* to "Crooked Hillary". After all, Trump turned out to be right about Cruz, didn't he? If he was right about Cruz, then he's probably right about Hillary, too.
Scott Adams style disclaimer: I'm not claiming that that has any basis in rationality. I'm saying that that's what the perception will be, and people vote based on their perceptions, not on reality.
Anyhow... Cruz's speech has all the hallmarks of something done by a person who's smart, but not as smart as he thinks he is. He figured he'd pull a fast one by giving a rousing speech in which he'd "forget" to endorse Trump, and nobody would notice. Typical of our political classes and their deep belief that everyone but them is a bunch of knuckledragging idiots.
Apparently Cruz is shocked that this backfired on him, which is typical for that sort of arrogant know-it-all - the ones used to winning every debate in their college classrooms - when their plans don't work in the real world. He completely misread the situation and came out looking petty, vindictive, and out for himself when the party needed unity. Everyone noticed. He's done now. This was his R. Budd Dwyer moment, on live television in front of millions of people.
