For general study in high school, I usually just reread the textbooks before the exam, I mostly just try to memorize the information and stuff. For maths and any other subject that deals with numbers, I need to understand the basic concept or I just down with my sheer luck.
On my college years, especially for learning Mandarin, I don't have any other choice beside practicing it as much as I can. I need to prepare the chapter that I'm going to learn before class, take some notes on class, and then rehearse it after the class whether with friends or alone.
