How would you know if the person is not lying?

Usually you would know by the way he looks at you and by the sincerity in his voice. And maybe as long as his story isn't absurd or too good to be true, and if he is consistent in the things he says, there's a good chance he's being honest to you.

do you believe in the saying, "You become what you despise"?

I believe that's it's very possible that we can become the very thing we abhor if we're not very careful about it. A good example of this is when we dislike certain people because they are always critical of us. We're too focused on our hatred for their behavior that we too start judging them ourselves. Another would be when we loathe someone for being selfish. Because he doesn't know to share to us and we despite that about him, we too tend to be ungiving to him, thinking he's getting the treatment he deserves, but not realizing we've become just as selfish as well.
