What can I do to cut away an unnecessary part from an MKV video?

you can use mkvmerge to cut the video, but only at keyframes

"What are the odds X happens? Are they over 70%?" or "What are the odds X happens? Is it over 70%?"?

the former, though normally if you were giving a flat percentage you'd just say "what is the chance X will happen? is it over 70%?"

For what it's worth, MAL lists "The Vanishment of Haruhi Suzumiya" as an alternate title for 涼宮ハルヒの消失.

i'm aware. it still sounds strange compared to "disappearance"

Is "vanishment" a word? I could have sworn it used to be the default translation of 消失 but now I hardly see it anywhere.

it's in the dictionary, so i suppose so
most people would say "disappearance" though

Do you use standard fansub Hepburn when romanizing not-well-known placenames? Like everyone writes Tokyo and Osaka instead of Toukyou and Oosaka, but what about, say, Osaki/Oosaki (大崎)?

as close to the middle as possible but also in such a way that one or two words of a single clause aren't awkwardly stranded on the other line. this is especially apparent with commas

yeah, i have. they tend to be overused by beginners and it's usually better to just choose a more descriptive verb

Is there a way to re-encode 1080p mkv anime to 720p with smallest quality loss? I have some 1080p BD-rip anime but unfortunately my laptop is no good with 1080p videos.

there'll be quality loss no matter what you do, but if you re-encode at like crf 17-18 i doubt you'll notice, especially on your laptop screen
you can do the re-encode directly in x264 like
x264.exe inputfile.mkv -o outputfile.mkv --tune animation --crf 18 --preset veryslow --acodec copy --vf resize:1280,720
like, i obviously wouldn't do this for anything i was planning to release for public consumption but for stuff you're just watching yourself on a low spec pc it should be fine

it has a semicolon in the title so it's sciadv to me
if it's aniplex it will almost certainly be simul and either way there will be plenty of tv raws, don't worry
