What is the darkest tone/atmosphere you've seen in an anime? I mean like Taxi Driver tier next level shit here, not Cowboy Bebop, The Big O, Black Lagoon, Psycho Pass, and etc which might only be dark in stretches.

Hard to say off the top of my head, but I feel like mentioning that based on what I saw and what I heard of the LNs, the overall story in Unbreakable Machine-Doll is so ridiculously dark that I don't want to seek out any more of it. The show definitely fits your "only dark in stretches" exclusion though.
