Why is linguistics knowledge so thin among fansubbers? I don't mean things like knowledge of the grammatical rules of prestige English and Japanese understanding. More like a general meta-linguistic awareness of language in general.

because we all have IT degrees and never studied linguistics formally

that seems kind of backwards. sort of like if a guy introduces himself to you as Tarou and you're like "whoa there, 太郎, but I think I should have some say on how you're referred to in english. and I've decided your name is Bob."

depends on level of bad. a truly bad translation is worse than no translation

I don't see why not. Most of fansubbing is about working with text and audio anyway.

to auto-tweet scores from music games, lol
but I got more into it like a year after that mostly to blog all my random thoughts online and hang out with friends. I don't really follow celebs / brands / news outlets / etc.
